Schools across India are set to observe multiple holidays and closures this week as the final week of August 2026 begins. From weather-related closures in parts of Odisha amid heavy rainfall to festive holidays for Eid-e-Milad-un-Nabi, Onam and Raksha Bandhan, students in several states can expect days off from school. However, the holiday schedule will vary across states and individual schools.

Students and parents can check the school holidays listed for this week below:

    Eid-e-Milad-un-Nabi (August 26)

All schools across India will remain closed on Wednesday, August 26, on account of Eid-e-Milad-un-Nabi.  It is a gazetted public and school holiday in the majority of Indian states.

The festival is celebrated by Muslims across India in observance of the birth anniversary of Prophet Muhammad. According to the Islamic calendar, the festival is celebrated on the 12th day of Rabi’ al-Awwal, which corresponds to August 26 in the Gregorian calendar.

    Onam (August 26)

While schools in most north Indian states will remain closed on Wednesday for Milad-un-Nabi, schools situated in the state of Keralam (formerly called Kerala) will be closed due to Onam. It is celebrated mainly by people belonging to the Malayali community to hail the mythical king ‘Mahabali’ and express their gratitude for a good harvest.

Many schools in other parts of India also provide a holiday for Onam. School students and their parents can check their academic calendar or circulars released by the institutes to know if they have a holiday.

    Raksha Bandhan (August 28)

All the schools located in north Indian states like Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Gujarat, Uttarakhand, Bihar, etc will be closed on Friday, August 28, due to Raksha Bandhan. As the celebration of this festival is not much prevalent in southern states, students from such states are required to check with their school authorities to know the holiday status.

Students and parents are advised to check their academic calendar and broadcast groups for official information.
