A new mpox outbreak is putting children in focus as health authorities investigate suspected infections and work to contain the virus in Guinea-Bissau.

Mpox Surge in Guinea-Bissau: Why Children Are Being Hit?

Guinea-Bissau is confronting its first-ever mpox outbreak, with 46 suspected cases reported and 23 involving children under 15. UNICEF says 16 of the suspected pediatric cases are children aged 0-4, raising concern over the risk of severe complications.
The outbreak was declared on July 4, 2026, and seven cases had been confirmed among adults by August 17. UNICEF has warned that fragile disease surveillance could mean additional infections are going undetected. (1✔ ✔Trusted Source

Guinea-Bissau Reports Its First Mpox Outbreak

Guinea-Bissau declared its first-ever mpox outbreak on July 4, 2026. By August 17, the country had reported seven confirmed cases, all among adults. Six cases were in Bissau, and one was in the Biombo Region. No deaths had been reported.

The outbreak is attracting particular attention because of the number of suspected cases among children.

Half of Suspected Mpox Cases Are Children

Of the 46 suspected mpox cases, 23 were children under 15, meaning children account for half of all suspected cases. Sixteen of these children were between 0 and 4 years old.

Young children are a major concern because they can be more vulnerable to complications from mpox. The reopening of schools in September could also increase close contact among children and create more opportunities for mpox transmission.

When children make up half of suspected cases, every missed infection matters.

Why Health Officials Are Worried About Hidden Transmission?

Another concern is that the confirmed mpox (monkeypox) cases do not appear to be linked to one another. This raises the possibility that there are undetected chains of transmission in the community.

Guinea-Bissau also has gaps in community surveillance, testing, contact tracing, and identifying how the virus is spreading. These challenges can make it harder to find infections before they spread further.

UNICEF is supporting the Ministry of Public Health, WHO, and other partners with surveillance, contact tracing, infection prevention, and community awareness.

The sooner an infection is found, the easier it is to stop the chain.

Mpox Explained: What Causes It, and How Does the Virus Spread?

Mpox is an infectious disease caused by the mpox virus, which belongs to the Orthopoxvirus family. It can cause
Most people recover, but some can develop serious illness.

The virus mainly spreads through close physical contact with an infected person, particularly contact with skin lesions, body fluids, or respiratory secretions. It can also spread through contaminated clothing, bedding, and other materials.

Mpox can also spread from infected animals to humans through direct contact. During pregnancy, the virus can pass from an infected pregnant person to the fetus or newborn.

    What Happens Next?

Health authorities are focusing on early detection, testing, contact tracing, and infection prevention to slow the spread of mpox in Guinea-Bissau.

Families are being encouraged to seek medical care quickly if a child or other family member develops a rash, fever, swollen lymph nodes, or other possible mpox symptoms.

UNICEF says it needs more than US$150,000 in emergency funding to support key parts of the mpox response, including disease surveillance, prevention, and care. Strengthening these efforts will be important as health teams continue to look for new infections. (2✔ ✔Trusted Source

Every confirmed case gives health workers another chance to break the chain of infection.

Guinea-Bissau’s mpox outbreak remains limited in confirmed cases, but the high number of suspected infections among children has raised concern. Continued testing, surveillance, and public awareness can help prevent further spread.

When it comes to mpox, catching the virus early is better than chasing it later.
