Can Persistent Headaches Be a Sign of a Brain Bleed?

A 62-year-old father from Buckinghamshire died after weeks of severe headaches were initially diagnosed as an ear infection, with his family now calling for greater awareness of persistent neurological symptoms.

Can Persistent Headaches Be a Sign of a Brain Bleed?

A Buckinghamshire family is sharing the heartbreaking story of 62-year-old Paul Camfield after he died from brain bleeds that followed weeks of persistent headaches which were initially treated as an ear infection.
His family hopes that by speaking publicly, others will seek urgent medical attention if severe headaches do not improve or are accompanied by unusual symptoms.

According to reports, Camfield first began experiencing intense headaches after suffering a fall in which he hit his head. Believing the symptoms were related to an ear infection, doctors prescribed antibiotics. However, despite completing the treatment, the headaches continued and gradually worsened.

Seizure at Home Led to a Medical Emergency

On June 20, while at home with his 11-year-old son, Camfield suffered a seizure and fell out of bed. The fall fractured his spine and resulted in two brain bleeds. He was rushed by ambulance to Stoke Mandeville Hospital, where scans confirmed the extent of his injuries.

Family members said that although the injuries appeared serious, they were reassured that he was expected to recover. They recalled that he remained conscious, was able to walk around the ward, and spoke with other patients, even though he continued complaining of severe headaches.

    Second Brain Bleed Changed Everything

After spending about a week in hospital, Camfield reportedly suffered another brain bleed. His condition rapidly deteriorated, prompting an emergency transfer to John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford for specialist neurosurgery. Despite surgeons’ efforts, doctors informed the family that the brain damage was too extensive for him to recover. He later died from his injuries.

    Family Calls for Greater Awareness

Camfield’s eldest son, Toby, said the family never imagined persistent headaches could signal such a serious medical problem. They hope sharing Paul’s story will encourage people not to ignore ongoing headaches, particularly if they follow a head injury or fail to improve with treatment.

The tragedy has been especially devastating for Camfield’s youngest son, Josh, who had already lost his mother, Elaine Crone, to cancer earlier this year. Camfield’s older children have since launched fundraising efforts and are making arrangements to ensure Josh’s future care.

    Ambulance Response Also Under Review

The family also raised concerns about the emergency response on the day of the seizure, saying they had to make three emergency calls before an ambulance arrived approximately 42 minutes later. South Central Ambulance Service confirmed that three 999 calls were received and said all calls were triaged according to established emergency protocols. The service also expressed its condolences to the family.

Study Highlights the Importance of Evaluating Severe Headaches Promptly

A 2025 clinical review published in The BMJ warns that sudden or persistent severe headaches can sometimes be an early sign of life-threatening conditions such as intracranial or subarachnoid hemorrhage (1✔ ✔Trusted Source

    ).

The review emphasizes that while most headaches are not caused by serious illnesses, patients with red-flag symptoms—including headaches after a head injury, seizures, or neurological changes—should undergo prompt medical evaluation and brain imaging to rule out potentially fatal conditions.

Researchers note that early diagnosis is critical because delays in identifying brain bleeds can significantly worsen outcomes.

When Should a Headache Be Treated as an Emergency?

Medical experts advise that while most headaches are not life-threatening, some symptoms require immediate medical evaluation. People should seek urgent care if a headache:

    • Begins suddenly and is extremely severe.
    • Develops after a head injury.
    • Is accompanied by seizures, confusion, weakness, vision changes, or difficulty speaking.
    • Persists or worsens despite treatment.

Although it is not possible to conclude from this individual case that the initial diagnosis caused Camfield’s death, health experts say persistent or worsening headaches—especially following a head injury—should always be reassessed promptly rather than being assumed to have a benign cause.
