Kyler Murray and J. J. McCarthy are locked in a battle for the starting quarterback job on the Minnesota Vikings. Murray arrived after a seven-year stint with the Arizona Cardinals, while McCarthy is fresh off his first full season as the Vikings’ QB1.

According to Minnesota Sports Fan on X, the Vikings are doing everything in their power to keep the integrity of their starting QB competition alive. NFL insider, Jeremy Fowler, said,

“So I’m told, between Kyler Murray and JJ McCarthy, the Vikings are comfortable letting this play out a little bit longer.

“They’re not pressed to name somebody the first team guy or give a guy first team reps. They are splitting it evenly still.”

    J. J. McCarthy missed his rookie season with a knee injury. He was the team’s undisputed starter in the 2025 season, posting a stat line of 1,632 passing yards, 11 passing touchdowns, and 12 interceptions. The Vikings missed the playoffs, and questions were raised about McCarthy’s compatibility with star wide receiver Justin Jefferson.

The Vikings signed Kyler Murray to a one-year, veteran-minimum contract following his release by the Arizona Cardinals. Murray and McCarthy are now competing for the QB1 spot ahead of a crucial 2026 campaign.

Kyler Murray gearing up for Year 8

The Arizona Cardinals drafted Kyler Murray with the first pick of the 2019 draft. The 2018 Heisman Trophy winner instantly became the team’s starting quarterback, and he led them to five wins in his rookie season.

Murray built a reputation as one of the best dual-threat signal-callers during his time in Arizona. He earned two Pro Bowl selections and led the team to the playoffs once. However, the end of his tenure was marred by injuries, resulting in just five appearances in the 2025 season.

The Cardinals subsequently released Murray, clearing the path for him to sign a prove-it deal with the Minnesota Vikings. He’ll now get the chance to throw passes to Justin Jefferson and feature in the Vikings’ dynamic offense.

Kyler Murray is entering the eighth season of his professional football career. Murray will look to remind the league of his dual-threat talent while leading the Vikings on a postseason run. However, he’ll need to beat J. J. McCarthy in their preseason quarterback battle.
