NHS Launches Major Prostate Cancer Research Drive

The NHS has begun contacting half a million men who have or have had prostate cancer, inviting them to join Prostate Progress. The initiative aims to create one of the world’s largest prostate cancer research resources by combining patient experiences with NHS health records.

NHS Launches Major Prostate Cancer Research Drive

The NHS is contacting around 500,000 men across England who have been diagnosed with or treated for prostate cancer. Eligible men will receive letters and text messages explaining how they can register for Prostate Progress, a nationwide research programme led by Prostate Cancer Research and supported by the NHS DigiTrials recruitment service.
The initiative is intended to become one of the world’s largest prostate cancer research resources. It will collect information about diagnosis, treatment, symptoms, side effects and quality of life from men living with the disease or recovering from it.

Prostate Progress: Integrating Patient Experiences with NHS Records

Men who join the programme will complete questionnaires every few months about their treatment experiences, symptoms and daily lives. With their consent, these responses will be securely linked to their NHS records for approved research purposes.

Verified researchers will be able to compare what men report about living with prostate cancer with clinical information such as their symptoms, scans and treatments. This combined information could provide a clearer picture of how prostate cancer affects men before, during and after treatment.

Prostate Cancer Remains the UK’s Most Common Cancer

Prostate cancer is now the most commonly diagnosed cancer in the UK. Around 60,000 new cases are diagnosed each year, while more than 12,000 men die from the disease annually.

The NHS says survival rates have improved in recent decades because of research and clinical trials. Prostate Progress aims to support further progress by helping researchers understand how the disease develops, how it affects quality of life and which treatments work best for different patients.(1✔ ✔Trusted Source

Research Could Improve Early Detection and Treatment

Researchers hope the program will help identify signs of aggressive prostate cancer earlier and support the development of better diagnostic tests. The information may also help researchers study treatment safety, understand side effects and improve future clinical trials.

The long-term aim is to use evidence from patient experiences and NHS records to develop more effective treatments and improve care for men diagnosed with prostate cancer.

Black Men Face Higher Prostate Cancer Risk

The programme is particularly seeking greater participation from Black men, who face approximately twice the risk of developing prostate cancer. Around one in four Black men in the UK is expected to receive a prostate cancer diagnosis during their lifetime.

Better representation could help researchers understand differences in diagnosis, treatment and outcomes. Colin McFarlane, who has previously had prostate cancer, has encouraged Black men to join the initiative so research can better reflect the experiences of their families and communities.

Patient Participation Will Strengthen the Research Resource

Prostate Progress depends on men sharing information about their diagnosis, treatment and recovery. The program says each participant’s experience can add important detail that may not be visible in routine NHS records.(1✔ ✔Trusted Source

An initial pilot involved 5,000 recruits. The wider rollout aims to include up to half a million men, creating a much larger evidence base for future prostate cancer studies.

The Findings Could Shape Future NHS Services

The data collected through Prostate Progress could help researchers plan new NHS services and improve support for men living with prostate cancer. It may also guide future clinical trials and help identify areas where patients need better information or follow-up care.

By linking medical records with men’s own accounts, the initiative aims to connect clinical outcomes with the realities of living through prostate cancer.(1✔ ✔Trusted Source

Stephen Fry And Colin McFarlane Back The Programme
Actor Sir Stephen Fry, who was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2018 and later underwent surgery, described Prostate Progress as “genuinely hopeful.”

Fry said the initiative could turn individual experiences into knowledge that may help future generations of men live longer and healthier lives.

Colin McFarlane has also urged invited men to participate, saying the research could benefit “ourselves, our fathers, our sons, our brothers, our families and future generations.”

Both actors are supporting the NHS-backed campaign.
