Bobby Witt Jr.’s wife, Maggie (nee Black), disclosed that her fairytale relationship with the Kansas City superstar began entirely by surprise. The Royals shortstop actively engineered a way into his now-wife’s schedule during their high school days.

Witt, who signed an 11-year, $288.7 million deal in February 2024, married his longtime love in December of that year. His wife shared details of their love story on “Not So Little with Kendall Vertes,” released on YouTube on Friday.

“I was a grade above him,” Maggie said (Timestamp 38:16). “I was a junior. He was a sophomore. And back then, you know, you could, like, make your own schedule and stuff. He asked my best friend, like, at the time, like, ‘What’s Maggie’s schedule look like? What classes is she taking?”

At their high school, physics was the only class that one could take with an upperclassman. Witt sat behind his future wife in the class, but didn’t speak to her for three months. Their interaction began after they had to do a group project.

“His first move was a Snapchat. And I had actually just, like, broken up with a previous boyfriend, and he was like, ‘Oh, like, you’re so beautiful. Like, you deserve better,’ like all this stuff. And I was like, ‘Oh, so sweet.’ But he put the big guns on when he started leaving smoothies on my car after softball practice every day with a note.”

While Maggie was an upperclassman, she was only a few months older than her husband. She was born in February 2000, while Witt was born in June. She speculated in the interview that Witt started kindergarten late because his father won the 2001 World Series with the Arizona Diamondbacks.

In the same interview, Bobby Witt Jr.’s wife, Maggie, shared that maintaining a thriving relationship through years of geographic separation requires complete emotional transparency. Clear communication allowed Witt and his now-wife to overcome the gruelling demands of minor league development.

“So I graduated in 2018, went to college,” Maggie said (Timestamp 41:45). “I was a freshman while he was finishing his senior year. Got drafted. And then, so right when he got drafted, which was, like, in June or something, you go straight to rookie ball in Arizona. So, I think I went to Arizona to visit him and stuff.”

Afterward, Witt concentrated on minor league development in Arizona, while Maggie did the same in Louisiana. He quickly rose through Double-A in Arkansas and Triple-A in Omaha.

“But honestly, it was kind of good that we both played basically the same sport,” Maggoe said. “Like, we knew, like, hey, we’ll wake up, you send a good morning text, and then you’ll talk later tonight. And that was just it. But obviously, the biggest thing is communication.”

Maggie played college softball at Northwestern State University in Louisiana. She primarily played third base and shortstop from 2019 through 2022.
