A new daily GLP-1 pill, Foundayo, is now available by private prescription in the UK for eligible adults managing obesity or type 2 diabetes. It offers an alternative to injections but must be used under medical supervision, with warnings about counterfeit products.

Could a daily tablet make GLP-1 treatment more accessible to people who cannot or do not want to use injections?
Foundayo, the brand name for orforglipron, became available through selected UK pharmacies on private prescription on August 24, 2026. The medicine can support weight management in eligible adults and improve blood-sugar control in people with insufficiently controlled type 2 diabetes.
Henry Gregg, chief executive of the National Pharmacy Association, described the launch as “particularly significant for patients who cannot or do not want to take an injectable medicine,” according to ITV News.
However, replacing an injection with a tablet does not turn GLP-1 treatment into an ordinary slimming product. Foundayo remains a prescription-only medicine requiring clinical assessment, gradual dose escalation and continued monitoring.

The UK Becomes Europe’s First Foundayo Market
The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency authorised Foundayo on August 10, making the UK the first European country to approve orforglipron for weight management and type 2 diabetes.
The approval followed an MHRA assessment of the medicine’s quality, safety and effectiveness. The agency said Foundayo would remain under close review, as occurs with other GLP-1 receptor agonists.
Orforglipron belongs to the same broad medicine class as several established injectable treatments, but it is a small-molecule GLP-1 receptor agonist formulated as a tablet.
Its launch adds another oral option to a market previously dominated by weekly injections.

Eligibility Depends on Medical Need, Not Cosmetic Goals
Foundayo is authorized for weight loss and weight maintenance, alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, in adults with:
- A BMI of 30 or above
- A BMI between 27 and 30 with at least one weight-related health condition
It is also authorized to improve glycemic control in patients whose type 2 diabetes remains insufficiently controlled.
A BMI measurement alone does not determine whether Foundayo is appropriate. Prescribers should also consider medical history, current medicines, previous treatments, diabetes control, potential side effects and individual treatment goals.
The MHRA states that GLP-1 medicines are intended to treat specific medical conditions and should not be used solely for cosmetic weight loss by people who do not meet the clinical criteria.

A Daily Tablet Without Injections or Mealtime Restrictions
Foundayo is taken once daily and can be used at any time of day without food or water restrictions. This may be helpful for patients who dislike injections or find medicine-related fasting and meal-timing requirements difficult.
Treatment begins at 0.8 mg and may be increased through the following dose levels: 2.5 mg, 5.5 mg, 9 mg, 14.5 mg and 17.2 mg.
Patients spend at least one month at each level. Dose increases should be directed by the prescriber and depend on treatment response and tolerability.
Moving rapidly to a higher dose does not guarantee faster weight loss and may increase adverse effects. Patients should never change their dose, take additional tablets or switch between GLP-1 medicines without professional advice.
Foundayo Helps Regulate Hunger and Blood Sugar
GLP-1 is a hormone released naturally after eating. It contributes to appetite regulation, fullness and blood-sugar control.
Orforglipron activates the GLP-1 receptor, helping patients feel fuller for longer while reducing hunger and food cravings. This may lower calorie intake when treatment is combined with sustainable dietary and activity changes.(2✔ ✔Trusted Source

In people with type 2 diabetes, the medicine also helps reduce blood-glucose levels when they are elevated.
Foundayo does not replace healthy eating, physical activity or other aspects of diabetes care. It is intended to form part of a broader treatment plan rather than work as an isolated solution.
Clinical Trials Put Foundayo’s Weight-Loss Effect into Perspective
In the Phase 3 ATTAIN-1 trial, adults with obesity or overweight but without diabetes received orforglipron or placebo alongside lifestyle intervention for 72 weeks.
According to findings published in The New England Journal of Medicine, average weight reduction with orforglipron ranged from approximately 7.8% to 12.4%, depending on the treatment group, compared with about 2.1% with placebo under the trial’s efficacy analysis.
Nearly 60% of participants in the highest-dose group lost at least 10% of their body weight, while almost 40% lost at least 15%.
These are group averages from a controlled clinical trial, not predictions for every patient. Individual results may differ according to dose, adherence, health conditions, side effects, diet and physical activity.
The trial also does not mean that every user will continue losing weight indefinitely or that the medicine can permanently replace long-term lifestyle and medical support.(1✔ ✔Trusted Source

Side Effects Require Medical Monitoring
Common Foundayo side effects include nausea, constipation, diarrhoea, vomiting, indigestion and abdominal pain, particularly when treatment begins or the dose increases. Gradual dose escalation can improve tolerability.
Severe vomiting or diarrhoea may cause dehydration, while persistent abdominal pain spreading to the back requires urgent assessment for possible pancreatitis.
People who are pregnant, planning pregnancy or breastfeeding should seek medical guidance, and patients must inform surgical teams about GLP-1 use before sedation or anaesthesia.
Private Prescriptions Come Before an NHS Decision
Foundayo is initially available through private prescription. It is not currently available through the NHS.
The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence is assessing the clinical effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of orforglipron for managing overweight and obesity.
MHRA approval and NHS availability are separate decisions. Regulatory approval means a medicine can legally be supplied for its authorized uses. NICE must additionally decide whether its benefits justify its cost within the health service and which patient groups should receive it.
Until that process is completed, patients obtaining Foundayo privately will need an assessment and prescription from a qualified healthcare professional.(1✔ ✔Trusted Source

Counterfeit Tablets Pose a Growing Risk
Pharmacy leaders warn that tablets may be easier for criminals to imitate and distribute than injection devices. Rising demand could therefore increase the availability of fake, unlicensed or incorrectly dosed products.
The MHRA warns that medicines from unregulated sellers may contain the wrong dose, undeclared ingredients, harmful contaminants or no active medicine.
Patients should obtain Foundayo only through a qualified prescriber and a registered physical or regulated online pharmacy.
Foundayo Is Not a Casual Slimming Tablet
Eli Lilly medical director Dr Emily Pegg warned that the medicine should not be taken by people who are not overweight.
“These medicines are not for you” if the clinical eligibility criteria are not met, she told ITV News.
Using a GLP-1 medicine without medical need can expose a person to side effects without a clearly established benefit. It may also delay recognition of eating disorders, hormonal conditions or other reasons for unexpected weight changes.(1✔ ✔Trusted Source

A legitimate prescription is therefore more than a legal requirement. It allows a healthcare professional to confirm eligibility, review risks, select an appropriate dose and monitor whether treatment remains beneficial.
A Pill Changes Delivery, Not the Rules of Treatment
Foundayo may broaden treatment choice for people who cannot tolerate injections or strongly prefer an oral medicine. Its flexible timing could also make daily treatment easier for some patients.
Convenience, however, should not be confused with simplicity. Orforglipron remains a powerful prescription medicine with eligibility requirements, dose-escalation rules, side effects and counterfeit risks.
The responsible message is not that weight loss has become as easy as taking a tablet. It is that eligible patients now have another evidence-based treatment option that must be used with professional guidance, appropriate nutrition, physical activity and long-term medical monitoring.
