What to Wear to a National Park, From Hiking Boots to Smart Layers

After years of exploring national parks across the country—from early mornings in Acadia to unforgettable days spotting wildlife in Yellowstone—I’ve found that no two parks require you to pack the same way. That’s part of the adventure: America’s awe-inspiring national parks span everything from rugged coastlines and alpine peaks to geothermal landscapes and dense forests. And trust me, conditions can often change just as quickly as the scenery. A cool trailhead at sunrise can turn into a warm afternoon hike, only to end with a breezy overlook that probably has you reaching for another later.

There isn’t one perfect packing list for every national park visit, but there is one smart way to build one. What I find to be the easiest method? Thinking in systems rather than single pieces: layers you can peel off without a second thought, gear that’s both comfortable and durable, and outdoor essentials that work just as they do on mile 1 as mile 10. Will you end up brushing through tall grass? A little extra coverage around your ankles goes a long way. Watching for wildlife before the sun is fully up? You’ll be glad you packed that lightweight layer. Caught in one of those quick mountain weather changes that always seem to arrive out of nowhere? A packable shell suddenly feels like the MVP of your bag.

And once the practical boxes are checked, that’s when the whimsy comes in. Outdoor brands like Halfdays, FP Movement, Patagonia, and Athleta have quite frankly never looked better, with cheerful colorways, unique designs, and trail-ready pieces all proving that function doesn’t have to mean boring. After all, national parks are some of the most beautiful places in the country, if not the world—and your packing list should be every bit as thoughtful as the adventure itself.

Read on for what to pack—and how to add some whimsy—to your national park packing list, from the Everglades to Joshua Tree and beyond.

    Comfortable hiking pants

No matter which national park you may be headed to, a pair of comfortable hiking pants is always a great idea. Even if you’re staying in the car for a road trip or booking a guided tour, you really never know where the wild might take you.
