Patrick Mahomes is getting ready for a huge moment in his career. He’s shown the ability to handle success, but can he handle a down year? The quarterback will be a monumental catalyst for the season, but he won’t be the only one asked to bring success to the franchise after a disastrous outing in 2025.

Here’s a look at the positions most in need heading into training camp. Whether a new hero arises from the depths of the roster or an external hire is needed, the Chiefs need better at these spots heading into the season.

    #5 – Wide Receiver

Rashee Rice has dealt with as much off-the-field trouble as any player still expected to suit up for 2026. Xavier Worthy has also failed to blow away fans with his production. If Patrick Mahomes’ team were to add another reliable weapon, it would not exactly crowd the locker room.

    #4 – Tight End

Travis Kelce has done a lot for Patrick Mahomes over the last decade, but the tight end is clearly dealing with a split focus with one foot out the door. Heading into an age 37 season, the wall could hit at any time. The tight end has already seen a decline in recent years with three consecutive seasons under 1,000 yards. Adding a contingency plan makes sense.

    #3 – Offensive Line

With the running back room completely rebuilt coming into the season and Patrick Mahomes coming off a season-ending injury, keeping big holes and a clean pocket will be paramount. The Chiefs have every reason to bolster the depth and add a potential starter for the sake of the offense. Otherwise, 2025 may happen a second time.

    #2 – Defensive Tackle

At 32 years old, Chris Jones isn’t getting any younger. Considering the team finished 25th in sacks in 2025, adding a new piece or two makes plenty of sense. The defense was the biggest problem in Kansas City last season, and a great pass rush can help create a great secondary with pressure.

    #1 – Cornerback

Mansoor Delane is the future of the cornerback room, but the rookie will be asked to face the toughest wide receivers in the NFL from the first snap. With his health a question heading into training camp (he is currently questionable, according to ESPN), being down a top cornerback could lead to a tough start for the season.

Even if it’s a temporary addition, bolstering the cornerback room is a borderline emergency for the team.
