The fire broke out at one of the processing lines at Port Talbot, the company said on Thursday.
“The incident is not related to the safe and successful demolition of the empty, redundant gas holder earlier yesterday evening,” Tata Steel UK said, adding that the Mid and West Wales Fire Service attended to the site while emergency services were working with local teams to completely extinguish the fire.
The 3.2 million tonne facility is transitioning to an electric arc furnace at an investment of £1.25 billion, with aid from the local government. It is expected to be commissioned by the end of 2027. Tata Steel has completed major demolition work of the blast furnaces for the transition, and is currently working on fabrication and delivery of equipment.
