Audi is reviving the A2 name for its new entry-level electric vehicle. With its debut just around the corner, Audi revealed a few more details about the new ultra-efficient EV.

Audi A2 e-tron is the brand’s most efficient car

After the original A2 first arrived over 25 years ago, it quickly became known as the “world’s first four-door three-liter car” with a combined fuel efficiency of 5.9 liters per 100 kilometers.

Audi is bringing the A2 name back, but this time it will be even more efficient with an all-electric powertrain.

Ahead of its official debut this fall, Audi revealed that the A2 e-tron will go on sale as its most efficient car ever.

“The Audi A2 has been a constant in my career ever since I joined the Volkswagen Group in the 1990s,” CEO Gernot Döllner said, adding, “This is precisely the vision we are carrying forward with the new A2 e-tron: outstanding efficiency, excellent everyday usability, and a clear understanding of what customers expect from modern electric mobility.”

Under WLTP conditions, the Audi A2 e-tron with the 140 kW motor and efficiency package achieves an energy consumption of 12.8 kWh per 100 km.

It also has a drag coefficient of just 0.24, the best in Audi’s compact lineup. Audi said the improved efficiency is thanks to its new electric drive, batteries, and aerodynamic design.

The Audi A2 e-tron features an active cool-air intake that stays closed during normal driving and at higher speeds to reduce drag. While charging or on hot summer days, the intake opens to cool and protect the battery and electronics.

Audi said the A2 e-tron 140 kW version is powered by a 61 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery that achieves 89.6% charging efficiency at the wallbox with an adaptive cooling strategy.

The entry-level EV is also equipped with bidirectional charging, enabling it to serve as a mobile energy bank with Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) and Vehicle-to-Home (V2H) capabilities.

Audi uses a cell-to-pack design for its LFP batteries to optimize energy density and free up more interior space.

Ahead of its official debut this fall, Audi revealed prices for the A2 e-tron will start at about €38,200 (about $44,000) in Germany with a WLTP driving range of up to 403 miles (649 km).

When it goes on sale this fall, the A2 e-tron will be available with four different power outputs: 125 kW, 140 kW, 170 kW, and 240 kW.

Like the new Volkswagen ID.3 Neo, Audi’s entry-level EV is expected to be offered with three battery packs: 50 kWh, 58 kWh, and 79 kWh. However, the A2 e-tron will deliver slightly more range at up to 403 miles (649 km).

Starting at €38,200 (about $44,000) in Germany, the A2 e-tron will arrive this fall as Audi’s most affordable EV. The Q4 e-tron starts at €47,500 ($54,00), or nearly €10,000 more than the electric A2.
