The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur has received a Rs 300-crore contribution from alumnus and IndiGo co-founder Rakesh Gangwal towards the development of the Gangwal School of Medical Sciences and Technology. The latest contribution takes Gangwal’s total contribution to the medical school to Rs 400 crore, including his earlier donation of Rs 100 crore in 2022.

The contribution has been provided to IIT Kanpur with the aim of accelerating the development of the medical school and further fortifying its vision of combining engineering, science, technology and medicine. In addition to this amount, Gangwal will also provide matching grants of up to Rs 300 crore against contributions made by other supporters towards the development of the School, as stated by the institute.

As per the development plans outlined by the institute, the Gangwal School of Medical Sciences and Technology is expected to include a 500-bed super-speciality hospital on the IIT Kanpur campus. A 200-bed cancer care research centre has also been proposed. These facilities are planned to support medical education, clinical research and healthcare delivery while promoting collaboration among doctors, scientists, engineers and technology experts.

The director of IIT Kanpur, Manindra Agrawal, expressed the institute’s gratitude to Gangwal for his constant support. According to him, Gangwal’s initial Rs 100-crore contribution back in 2022 helped the institute to set its plans in motion, while the latest Rs 300-crore contribution would assist in bringing the institute’s vision to reality sooner.
