    Cravings for sugary desserts or fatty snacks may not simply be a matter of willpower. According to preliminary findings presented at NUTRITION 2026, the annual meeting of the American Society for Nutrition, inherited genetic differences may play a significant role in shaping our taste preferences.

    “Our findings suggest that susceptibility to overeating hyperpalatable foods, such as sugary drinks, fried foods and potato chips, is partially rooted in our genes,” said Dr. Julie Gervis, a postdoctoral research fellow at the Center for Genomic Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital.

    One of the Largest Studies on Taste Genetics
    The researchers examined data from nearly half a million participants enrolled in the UK Biobank. Volunteers had previously submitted DNA samples and completed detailed questionnaires about their eating habits, food preferences, and overall health.

    To better understand taste preferences, scientists combined participants’ food questionnaires with sensory databases describing characteristics such as sweetness, fattiness, and saltiness. This allowed them to calculate genetic scores indicating an individual’s inherited tendency to prefer certain tastes.

    The approach enabled researchers to identify genetic variants associated with sweet, salty, and fatty food preferences on an unprecedented scale.

    Sweet Preference Linked to Higher Food Intake
    The study found that people with a stronger genetic predisposition for sweet foods consumed, on average, around 7 grams more sugary foods per day than those without the same genetic tendency.

    While the difference may appear modest, researchers say the additional sugar intake could accumulate over time and contribute to long-term health problems.

    Participants with higher genetic scores for sweet and fatty food preferences were also more likely to have higher body weight and an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

    Researchers believe these health risks are largely explained by greater consumption of highly palatable foods rich in sugar and fat.

    Genes Influence Diet, Which Affects Metabolic Health
    The findings highlight how inherited taste preferences may indirectly shape metabolic health through daily food choices.

    A diet high in sugary drinks, fried foods, desserts, and processed snacks can contribute to excess weight gain, elevated blood sugar levels, and eventually metabolic disorders such as obesity and type 2 diabetes.

    “Our findings suggest that genes underlying taste preferences may play an important role in metabolic disease risk by influencing dietary habits,” Gervis said.

    Personalized Nutrition Could Be the Future
    The researchers believe these discoveries could eventually help doctors identify individuals who are genetically more likely to overconsume sweet or fatty foods. Instead of recommending identical diets for everyone, future nutrition plans could be customized according to a person’s genetic profile.

    For example, someone with a strong inherited preference for sweet foods may benefit from targeted behavioral strategies, healthier substitutes, or flavor-enhancing spices that help reduce sugar intake without sacrificing taste. Such personalized approaches could improve long-term adherence to healthy diets and lower the risk of chronic diseases.

    Researchers Are Looking Beyond Sweet Taste
    The current findings are considered preliminary and have not yet undergone peer review.

    Researchers are now working to confirm the results in additional population studies while expanding their investigation to other taste preferences, including bitter, sour, and umami.

    The team is also exploring whether genetic taste preferences influence how people respond to GLP-1 medications, which are increasingly used to treat obesity and type 2 diabetes. Previous research suggests these medications can alter taste perception and eating behavior, raising new questions about how genetics may affect treatment success.

    A Step Toward Precision Medicine

    Although more research is needed, the study offers new insight into why healthy eating comes more naturally to some people than others.

    Rather than viewing food cravings as purely a matter of self-control, the findings suggest biology plays an important role. Understanding those genetic influences could help healthcare professionals develop more personalized strategies to prevent obesity, type 2 diabetes, and other diet-related metabolic conditions.

    As scientists continue exploring the relationship between genes, taste, and nutrition, personalized dietary recommendations may become an increasingly important tool in improving long-term health outcomes.
