Woman Develops Fournier Gangrene After Bikini Shave

A routine bikini shave took an unexpected and dangerous turn when a woman developed a rare, severe infection.

Her case highlights how quickly Fournier gangrene can progress and why unusual pain, swelling, or skin changes should never be ignored.

Women are less commonly affected, but research suggests they may experience higher morbidity and mortality than men. A large study found women accounted for 31% of identified Fournier gangrene cases and had higher mortality. (1✔ ✔Trusted Source

What Happened to This Woman After a Bikini Shave?

A 40-year-old woman developed worsening symptoms roughly a week after perineal bikini shaving and the application of an herbal preparation to her vulva by an alternative practitioner.

She developed intense pain and swelling affecting the left labia, with the swelling extending toward the area above the pubic bone. Vomiting and lower abdominal pain were also reported.

Her pulse had increased to 140 beats per minute, despite the absence of fever and with normal blood pressure. Tests showed a marked inflammatory response, prompting further investigation.

Doctors found several organisms in samples from the wound, including E. coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Enterobacter cloacae. No bacteria were found in her bloodstream.

Multiple Surgeries Were Needed Before Complete Healing

Once Fournier gangrene was diagnosed, doctors moved quickly to remove the affected tissue through surgical debridement.

Because the infection and tissue damage required ongoing management, she underwent further surgical re-explorations and negative-pressure wound therapy.

Treatment also included broad-spectrum antibiotics. The patient ultimately spent 77 days in hospital, receiving infection treatment, wound care, and reconstructive management.

Complete wound healing was documented on Day 121, according to the case report from doctors at King Saud University in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. (2✔ ✔Trusted Source

    What Causes Fournier Gangrene?

Fournier gangrene is a rare and fast-spreading form of necrotizing fasciitis that affects the genital and perineal areas. It is sometimes called a “flesh-eating” infection because bacteria can quickly damage the skin and deeper tissues.

It is more common in men, with reported male-to-female ratios of 10:1 to 40:1. However, women can also develop the infection when bacteria enter through broken or damaged skin.

Other possible starting points include skin infections, abscesses, urinary infections, surgery, or other injuries around the genital and perineal area.

Risk factors include diabetes, obesity, weak immunity, poor nutrition, kidney disease, poor blood circulation, and cancer. However, the infection can also occur in people without these risk factors.

Cuts, wounds, skin irritation, infections, and procedures can allow bacteria to enter the body.

Fournier Gangrene Is Rare but Can Become Life-Threatening

Fournier gangrene, though rare, is considered a medical emergency because the infection can spread rapidly through soft tissue and can become fatal if not treated promptly.

The condition accounts for less than 0.02% of all hospital admissions. Although historically considered predominantly a male disease, newer research shows that women make up a significant proportion of cases. (3✔ ✔Trusted Source

Fournier gangrene may be rare, but its rapid progression makes early medical attention important. Knowing the warning signs and avoiding delays in seeking care can help prevent serious complications.

“A stitch in time saves nine.” Paying attention to unusual changes in the body and seeking timely medical advice can go a long way in protecting health.
