How does hemolytic anemia affect older adults? Explore its symptoms, causes, complications, diagnosis, and treatment options.

Why Was Norway`s King Harald Hospitalized? Latest Health Update

Norway’s King Harald V experienced a deterioration in his health over the weekend while being treated in hospital for a bacterial infection in his bloodstream, but the 89-year-old monarch remains in stable condition, according to the Norwegian Royal Palace.
King Harald was admitted to hospital about a week ago after doctors treated him for hemolytic anemia. He had been receiving cortisone treatment in recent weeks, which caused fluid retention in his body and led to the need for further hospital care.

The latest health setback came after the King developed a bacterial blood infection. The palace said he is receiving antibiotics and has responded to the treatment. On Monday, officials said there had been no significant change in his condition and that he remained stable.

    What is Hemolytic Anemia?

) is a condition in which red blood cells are destroyed faster than the body can replace them. In older adults, it can be particularly challenging to diagnose because anemia may occur alongside chronic kidney disease, infections, inflammation, nutritional deficiencies, cancer, or medication use.

One important form is autoimmune hemolytic anemia (AIHA), in which the immune system mistakenly attacks red blood cells. Symptoms may include fatigue, weakness, shortness of breath, dizziness, pale or yellowish skin, and dark urine.

Diagnosis generally involves a complete blood count, reticulocyte count, bilirubin, lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), haptoglobin, peripheral blood smear, and direct antiglobulin (Coombs) test.

In elderly patients, doctors may also investigate underlying conditions such as lymphomas, chronic lymphocytic leukemia, autoimmune disorders, infections, or medication-related reactions.

Crown Prince Haakon visits the King

Crown Prince Haakon visited his father at the hospital on Monday as the King continues to remain on medical leave. Haakon has taken over the King’s official duties while his father is unable to carry them out.

The temporary transfer of responsibilities is not unprecedented. King Harald has experienced several periods of ill health during his reign, with Crown Prince Haakon previously stepping in when necessary.

The Norwegian royal household has not indicated when King Harald will leave hospital or return to his official duties.

    King Harald’s recent health problems

The latest hospitalization follows a series of health issues faced by the Norwegian monarch in recent years.

In February 2026, King Harald was hospitalized during a holiday in Tenerife after developing an infection. Earlier health problems have also included respiratory infections, heart-related treatment and the implantation of a permanent pacemaker in 2024.

The King has nevertheless continued to carry out royal responsibilities when his health has allowed him to do so. His current hospitalization means that his public duties remain suspended while doctors monitor his recovery.

Studies investigating the bone-marrow microenvironment and predictors of thrombosis further emphasize the need for individualized diagnosis and treatment, particularly in elderly patients who may have multiple medical conditions and greater vulnerability to treatment-related complications (2✔ ✔Trusted Source

    Norway watches the King’s recovery

The palace’s latest update has offered some reassurance while making clear that the King remains under medical treatment. His deterioration over the weekend raised concern, but his response to antibiotics and his currently stable condition are positive developments.

At 89, King Harald is Europe’s oldest reigning monarch. He has been on sick leave for several weeks, and the royal household is expected to continue providing updates as his condition develops.

For now, Crown Prince Haakon continues to represent the Norwegian monarchy in place of his father, while King Harald remains in hospital receiving treatment for the bacterial infection.
