The new MG4, the world’s first mass-produced EV with a semi-solid-state battery, has quickly become a bestseller in China, with the 100,000th model rolling off the production line in just eight months.
The new MG4 EV hits 100,000 production milestone
After launching the all-new MG4 at the Chengdu Auto Show last August, SAIC Motor deemed it “the world’s first mass-produced semi-solid-state” electric vehicle.
In just eight months, SAIC announced that the 100,000th model rolled off the production line, which, according to the company, is “a new record for the fastest-selling pure electric hatchback.”
The MG4 has consistently ranked as a top seller with over 10,000 models sold for the past seven months, ranking in the top three in its class. In April, sales reached a record of over 13,000 units.
The new MG4, sold as the MG4 Urban in Europe, the UK, and other overseas markets, is available in five trims, including a semi-solid-state edition. Prices start at just 68,800 yuan ($10,000), while the semi-solid-state model costs 102,800 yuan ($14,500).

It’s available with two lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery packs: 42.8 kWh or 53.95 kWh. The three lowest-priced trims use the smaller (42.8 kWh) battery, providing a CLTC range of 437 km (271 miles), while the Smart version uses the 53.95 kWh battery, delivering 530 km (330 miles) of range.
The semi-solid-state variant is powered by a 53.95 kWh semi-solid manganese-based lithium-ion battery, delivering 530 km (330 miles) of CLTC range.

All new MG4 models are powered by a single front-mounted “six-in-one” electric motor with 120 kW (161 hp) and 250 Nm torque. At a DC fast charger, it can recharge from 30% to 80% in 20 minutes.
Measuring 4,395 mm in length, 1,842 mm in width, and 1,551 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,750 mm, the MG4 is about the size of BYD’s popular Dolphin EV hatchback.
The interior is loaded with advanced tech and features, with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8155 in-car chip powering the smart cockpit. While the three lowest-priced trims have a 12.8″ central infotainment screen, upgrading to the Smart or semi-solid-state models gets you a bigger 15.6″ display with 2.5K resolution.

By reducing the liquid electrolyte content to just 5%, SAIC MG said the semi-solid-state EV battery significantly reduces the risk of combustion and improves the cycle life.
The battery also successfully passed two recent needle penetration tests, producing no smoke, fires, or explosions after two hours. According to SAIC MG, the achievement was an industry first, exceeding standards by 20%.
Earlier this week, SAIC opened blind pre-orders for the new MG 4X, an electric SUV variant with a semi-solid-state battery, starting at 99,800 yuan ($14,700).

The new MG4 has been a cornerstone of SAIC’s comeback in China. SAIC said “new energy vehicles are experiencing a surge in orders” earlier this month.
Through the first four months of 2026, SAIC Passenger Vehicle’s new energy vehicle (NEV) sales surged 234.2% with 128,000 deliveries.
By the end of 2026, SAIC plans to introduce the new battery tech in Europe and the UK. SAIC said the new battery tech, MG SolidCore Battery, has been “refined to accommodate regional road conditions, climate variations, and regulatory requirements” in Europe.
The MG4 Urban is expected to use the same 53.95 kWh semi-solid-state battery, but driving range will likely drop to about 400 km (248 miles) on the WLTP rating scale.
