Tesla stock is down more than 12% today, wiping out over $140 billion in market value, after the automaker’s Q2 2026 earnings missed on profit and free cash flow turned negative.
The slide got worse during the earnings call, when Elon Musk repeated the same robotaxi and Optimus promises he’s been making for years.
A bad quarter for everything but car sales
Tesla posted record revenue of $28.24 billion, up 26% year-over-year, and a record 480,126 deliveries. That’s about the only good news in Tesla’s Q2 2026 financial results.
Operating income fell 57% to $398 million. Operating margin collapsed to 1.4%, down from 4.1% a year ago. Adjusted earnings came in at $0.33 per share, well short of the roughly $0.53 Wall Street expected.
And for the first time in years, free cash flow went negative, at minus $1.09 billion, as capital spending jumped 142% to $5.79 billion.
The profit didn’t hold up for a few reasons. Regulatory credit revenue, long a source of near-free profit for Tesla, dropped 67% to $146 million as that well runs dry. Margins in the energy business came down too, even as storage deployments grew 41% to 13.5 GWh.
Even the record deliveries came with a catch. Tesla leaned on incentives to move cars, cheap financing in particular, and that ate into automotive margins on the way. So the one number that looked good was bought.
Not a great quarter.
Then Musk got on the call
The stock was already down after the print. It fell further once the earnings call started.
Musk spent the call repeating things he’s said many times. On Optimus, here’s his pitch for why Tesla’s humanoid robot beats the field: “No humanoid robots today can do generalized tasks without programming, but Optimus will be the first to do it.”
But that’s the exact thing every humanoid robot company is chasing. Everyone building a humanoid is betting on the same breakthrough in physical AI and generalized learning, so a robot can figure out a task instead of running pre-programmed routines. Nothing in this quarter shows Tesla is ahead of anyone on that. And mass production is still somewhere down the road.
The robotaxi numbers don’t back the story
On autonomy, the data out of the call was bad.
Tesla touted “more than 380,000 unsupervised miles” across six cities with “zero notable incidents.” Tesla gets to define what counts as notable. Waymo logs that many autonomous miles in about a day. Tesla took roughly six months.
And overall growth has stalled. Tesla’s own chart shows the growth is flat: paid Robotaxi miles came in flat quarter-over-quarter at roughly 900,000, and the active unsupervised fleet has actually been shrinking, down to around 21 cars.
Days before earnings, Tesla flipped on new service areas in Orlando and Tampa. It’s using the growing map as proof the system is scaling. But you can light up new cities without adding to your total of active cars. Spreading the same handful of vehicles across more metros doesn’t add up to more rides.
Musk again admitted safety is the limiting factor, the “march of nines” in the long tail of edge cases. He’s moved that goalpost before. The 380,000-mile record isn’t impressive when the cars run in small, geofenced areas at limited speeds. Avoiding notable accidents in that setup is the whole point of the guardrails.

Here’s what today really is: investors finding out that Elon Musk’s word isn’t worth what they’ve been paying for it.
He’s missed so many self-driving deadlines that the promises don’t move the stock the way they used to. At some point the credibility runs out, and this looks like that point. FSD v14 is impressive — but it’s a Level 2, supervised system. Most of the value Tesla sold people is in unsupervised self-driving, and that’s not what’s on the road. The 1.48 million FSD subscriptions are paying for a driver-assist feature, not the robotaxi future.
The irony is the timing. Crude oil is up about 5% today, back over $90 a barrel. That’s normally great for EV demand and for Tesla. But Tesla spent the last two years reframing itself as an AI company instead of a carmaker, and hitched its valuation to robots and robotaxis. So when the AI story wobbles, the whole thing drops, oil rally or not.
Optimus is “the first” only in Musk’s telling, and the Robotaxi fleet is shrinking while the map grows. Tesla is asking investors to fund a future on faith. Today, more than $140 billion of that faith walked out the door. How many more missed deadlines before the market stops paying up front?
