Former NFL quarterback Brian Hoyer delivered high praise for Kansas City Chiefs superstar Patrick Mahomes following the announcement of his record-shattering contract extension. The quarterback was handed a deal worth $504.75 million that will keep him on the team until 2033.

Hoyer, who won the Super Bowl during his time with the New England Patriots, shared his feelings about Mahomes’ ability on SiriusXM NFL Radio on Sunday. He compared the two-time NFL MVP to the greatest quarterbacks who have played the game this century.

“It’s not a shock to me to be honest with you because he’s the best player at the most important position in the world in all of sports,” Hoyer said. “That’s what it is. And honestly, to me, he’s the closest thing that our game right now has to a Tom Brady to a Peyton Manning.

“He’s a culture changer, a culture driver, and ultimately, he’s gotten the results right. Last year was an interesting year for the Chiefs because even before Patrick got hurt, they were kind of at a crossroads.”

Patrick Mahomes’ new contract is a two-year extension to his existing one, restructuring it to an eight-year pact. The deal, which can earn him up to $522.25 million with incentives, sets a new benchmark with a $64 million annual average starting in 2027. Brian Hoyer believes it’s all well-deserved for the quarterback.

Brian Hoyer commends Patrick Mahomes’ killer instinct

Patrick Mahomes is undoubtedly one of the quarterbacks who is capable of making explosive plays consistently in the NFL. This has been crucial to his success in the league, leading the Chiefs to three Super Bowl titles. However, Brian Hoyer feels it’s his killer instinct that sets him apart.

“This guy’s highly ultra motivated,” Hoyer said. “Now he’s coming back from an ACL injury. I can only imagine how motivated he is right now. He’s just unique. He has the killer instinct.

“I think that’s the one thing that separates him because we have guys in our league that are just as talented as Patrick. But what you’ve seen from him from an early age is just that killer instinct when the moment gets the biggest. That’s the guy right now that you want playing the position.”

Patrick Mahomes will be returning from an ACL injury he suffered late in 2025 in the upcoming season. Following a disappointing outing that saw the Chiefs miss the playoffs last season, there’s no doubt the quarterback will be highly motivated to elevate the team, as Hoyer said.
