The University of Delhi, on August 21, announced that 12,111 students from its first batch of four-year undergraduate programmes (FYUP) applied for admission to its one-year postgraduate programmes for the 2026-27 academic session. The university has offered one-year PG programmes in 46 programmes with 5,857 seats.

The first FYUP batch was admitted in 2022-23 under the Undergraduate Curriculum Framework (UGCF) 2022, based on the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. Of the 75,948 students admitted that year, 40,005 exited after completing three years in 2025, while 35,943 continued into the fourth year.

According to the university, 12,111 of these fourth-year students applied for one-year PG programmes, accounting for 34.27% of those who continued with the FYUP.

How many seats are available for one-year PG programmes?

DU has offered 5,857 seats across 46 one-year PG programmes for 2026-27. Of these, 2,807 seats are in regular mode, and 3,035 are offered through Open and Distance Learning (ODL) mode.

The 12,111 applications from fourth-year students are against these 5,857 seats. This means the available seats are equivalent to about 48.36% of the number of applicants. DU has also continued with the same number of seats for its two-year PG programmes for students who exited their undergraduate courses after three years.

Can FYUP students apply directly for PhD?

Yes. DU has amended its rules to allow eligible students completing the fourth year of the FYUP to apply directly for PhD programmes without completing a master’s degree.

For the 2026-27 PhD admissions, fourth-year students who complete their programme with a minimum CGPA of 7.5 can apply directly. The minimum requirement is 7 CGPA for SC/ST students.

The university said this provision will be available to the first batch of FYUP students only for the 2026-27 academic session as a special measure.

What does the fourth year of FYUP offer?

DU said the fourth year was introduced to strengthen research, entrepreneurship and practical learning at the undergraduate level. The curriculum includes skill-based courses, internships, apprenticeships, community outreach and entrepreneurship tracks.

Students choosing the academic project route in the fourth year are required to work on a real-world problem and produce a solution as the outcome of the project. The university has also said that 25 colleges have established Skill Development Centres with its funding.

The university said the FYUP has therefore been designed to provide multiple academic progression routes, including one-year postgraduate study and, for eligible students, direct entry to PhD programmes.
