Washington’s investment in elite blindside protection suffered a major blow when starting left tackle Laremy Tunsil tore his triceps during 1-on-1 pass-rushing drills against edge rusher Odafe Oweh. He walked off the field to undergo further testing, which confirmed a torn triceps muscle that will likely require surgery.

NFL insider Mike Garafolo broke the news on X on Friday.

“Sources to me and @wyche89: #Commanders five-time Pro Bowl LT Laremy Tunsil suffered a torn triceps in practice today during 1-on-1 pass-rush drills. He’ll likely require surgery and will miss at least a significant portion of the regular season,” Garafolo tweeted.

Fans flocked to the comments section to share their reactions to the news.

“30m paid to get hurt in drills these players are so soft it’s embarrassing,” a fan said.

“Jayden’s gonna die out there. This sucks for him and the team,” one fan commented.

“On the bright side, the team won’t have to deal with 35 false starts this year,” another fan added.

    Here are some more reactions.

“JD5 read this news and realized he’s going to be running for his life this season,” a fan wrote.

“The biggest loser here is Jayden Daniels,” one fan posted.

    “Contract Curse,” another fan said.

A full triceps repair ranges from 4 to 7 months. It puts Tunsil’s availability for most of the upcoming season in doubt.

The injury comes five months after Washington signed Tunsil to a two-year, $60.2 million extension ($30.1 million AAV, $52.65 million guaranteed), making him the highest-paid left tackle in NFL history.

Potential Laremy Tunsil replacements for the Commanders

With Laremy Tunsil expected to miss a major portion of the 2026 season due to a torn triceps, the Washington Commanders are forced to explore both internal roster options and external free-agent depth to protect Jayden Daniels’ blind side.

Wylie took over first-team left tackle snaps following Tunsil’s injury. The veteran has vast starting experience across the offensive line and re-signed with Washington on a multi-year deal. He is the top-projected starter in Laremy Tunsil’s absence.

Brandon Coleman split time between tackle and guard in previous seasons. If Washington prefers to keep Wylie at right tackle, sliding Coleman over to left tackle is a great internal option.

Washington added Petit-Frere to bolster offensive line depth, and veteran swing tackle Trent Scott is also on the roster. Both can come in handy if Washington prefers a pure backup tackle taking over the left side.

Cam Robinson, Taylor Decker, D.J. Humphries and Kendall Lamm are some of the options if Peters looks outside the organization for an experienced left tackle.
