What is the Omicron RF.5 variant and should you be concerned? Here’s what health experts say after 16 COVID-19 cases were confirmed in Andhra Pradesh.

New COVID Variant Omicron RF.5 Detected in Andhra Pradesh

A new Omicron sub-lineage, () RF.5, has been detected in Andhra Pradesh after genome sequencing confirmed the variant in COVID-19 samples collected from Kadapa district.

The discovery comes as the state reports 16 COVID-19 cases, prompting authorities to strengthen surveillance while reassuring the public that there is no evidence the variant causes more severe illness than other Omicron strains.

    RF.5 Confirmed Through Genome Sequencing

According to Andhra Pradesh Health Minister Satya Kumar Yadav, four COVID-19-positive samples from Kadapa district were sent to the National Institute of Virology (NIV) in Pune for genome sequencing. The analysis confirmed that all four samples belonged to the RF.5 sub-lineage of the Omicron variant.

The detection marks the first reported identification of the RF.5 variant in the state. Officials emphasized that genome sequencing remains an important tool for monitoring how the coronavirus continues to evolve and spread.

    16 COVID-19 Cases Reported

The Andhra Pradesh Health Department said the state has recorded 16 COVID-19 cases, including 12 infections reported up to July 16. While the number of cases remains relatively low, health authorities have increased monitoring following the identification of the new variant.

Officials have also reviewed hospital preparedness, ensuring adequate availability of isolation facilities, testing capabilities, and medical resources should infections increase.

    Is RF.5 More Dangerous?

At present, there is no scientific evidence suggesting that RF.5 causes more severe disease than other circulating Omicron sub-lineages.

Experts describe RF.5 as one of many Omicron descendants being tracked through routine genomic surveillance. While researchers are continuing to study its transmissibility and other characteristics, current data does not indicate an increased risk of severe illness or hospitalization compared with previous Omicron variants.

Health authorities stressed that identifying a new variant through genome sequencing is expected as the virus continues to mutate and does not necessarily signal the start of a new COVID-19 wave.

    State Strengthens Preparedness

Following confirmation of the RF.5 variant, Andhra Pradesh has stepped up its public health response by:

    • Expanding COVID-19 surveillance and testing.
    • Increasing genome sequencing of positive samples.
    • Reviewing hospital readiness and emergency response plans.
    • Continuing to monitor the spread of new variants.

Officials have urged residents to remain vigilant, especially older adults and people with underlying health conditions, while avoiding unnecessary panic.

    What Is the RF.5 Variant?

RF.5 is a sub-lineage of the Omicron variant, which has continued to evolve into multiple branches since first emerging in late 2021. Like other Omicron descendants, RF.5 is being monitored through genomic surveillance programmes around the world to understand whether it differs in terms of transmissibility, immune escape, or disease severity.

Scientists note that the appearance of new Omicron sub-lineages is a normal part of the virus’s ongoing evolution, and most are monitored without leading to significant public health concerns.

How Can You Protect Yourself Against RF.5?

Health officials advise people to continue following basic precautions, particularly if they develop symptoms such as fever, cough, sore throat, or fatigue. Individuals at higher risk of severe illness should stay up to date with recommended COVID-19 vaccinations and seek medical advice if symptoms worsen.

Authorities said they will continue tracking the RF.5 variant and provide updates if new evidence emerges regarding its behavior or public health impact.
