University of Mumbai has announced an apprenticeship-embedded BE Degree Programme (AEDP), under which eligible final-year engineering students will undertake a year-long apprenticeship alongside their degree. The programme is aimed at providing students with practical industry experience and training beyond classroom-based learning.

The programme has been introduced by the university’s Faculty of Science and Technology in line with the objectives of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and guidelines of the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE). Under the scheme, selected students will spend their seventh and eighth semesters in an industry apprenticeship and earn academic credits for the training.

Under this programme, a maximum of 15% of final-year B.E. students will be eligible to participate. Students are required to have a minimum 6.75 CGPA in the fifth semester, and selection will be based on merit score. Students with higher CGPA will be given preference. The university has clarified that students who are pursuing an Honours, Minor or Honours with Research degree will not be eligible to participate in this programme.

Selected students will need to complete a one-year apprenticeship in their seventh and eighth semesters. During this apprenticeship period, they will be required to undergo a minimum of 1,260 hours of practical training, after which they will receive a total of 42 credits.

As the initiative integrates education, skills and employment, final-year students will receive direct industry training and practical work experience in the industry alongside their engineering degree. As per the university, such a structure of education will enhance students’ employability and assist them in developing skills aligned with industry requirements.

According to the university’s vision outlined in its press release, enrolled students, on completion of this programme, will become capable of implementing the theoretical knowledge of their engineering curriculum to actual industry projects, processes and operations. In addition to the technical skills, the university will also help engineering students develop crucial professional skills such as communication, teamwork, problem-solving, decision-making and time management.

Through AEDP, Mumbai University aims to equip students for entering the professional world with greater confidence even as they complete their degree.
