Why did Snooki undergo a hysterectomy? The reality star opens up about her cervical cancer diagnosis, surgery, and recovery journey.

Jersey Shore`s Snooki Undergoes Hysterectomy After Cervical Cancer Diagnosis

Reality television star Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi is opening up about one of the most difficult experiences of her life after undergoing a hysterectomy (surgical removal of the uterus and cervix) just six months after being diagnosed with stage 1 cervical cancer.

Through an emotional series of social media videos, the Jersey Shore star shared the physical pain, emotional challenges, and the importance of routine cervical cancer screening, hoping her story encourages other women to prioritize their health.

Snooki Shares Details of Life-Changing Surgery

The 38-year-old revealed that doctors removed her uterus, cervix, fallopian tubes, and part of her vagina during surgery to ensure all cancerous tissue was eliminated. Her ovaries were preserved to prevent early menopause. She also underwent surgery to repair diastasis recti, a separation of the abdominal muscles that commonly occurs after pregnancy.

In the videos, Polizzi admitted she was terrified before the operation and described the recovery as more difficult than she expected. She said the pain has been significant and acknowledged the emotional weight of losing her reproductive organs, even though she and her husband, Jionni LaValle, already have three children. Before leaving for the hospital, she received what she described as “warm hugs” from her husband and children, a moment she said helped her face the surgery.

Despite the difficult recovery, Polizzi remains optimistic that the operation removed all traces of cancer and hopes she will not need chemotherapy or radiation.

Snooki’s Story Highlights the Power of Early Cervical Cancer Detection

Polizzi first revealed her stage 1 cervical cancer diagnosis earlier this year after years of abnormal Pap smear results. She has openly admitted that she delayed follow-up appointments because the exams were uncomfortable and she felt anxious about them.

When she finally returned for additional testing, doctors confirmed early-stage cervical cancer. Because the disease was detected before it had spread, surgery became the primary treatment option.

She has since used her platform to encourage women not to postpone cervical cancer screenings, saying that catching the disease early likely changed the course of her treatment and prognosis.

Medical experts say Polizzi’s experience highlights the importance of routine cervical cancer screening.

According to the American Cancer Society, cervical cancer detected at an early stage has a five-year relative survival rate of more than 90%, largely because treatment can begin before the disease spreads. Regular HPV testing and Pap smears remain the most effective tools for identifying precancerous changes and early cancers, allowing treatment before symptoms develop.

Radical Hysterectomy Remains a Standard Treatment for Cervical Cancer

Recent research continues to reinforce the importance of routine cervical cancer screening. A 2025 review in The Lancet Regional Health – Americas noted that HPV vaccination combined with regular cervical screening remains one of the most effective strategies () for preventing cervical cancer and reducing deaths through early detection.

For many women diagnosed with early-stage cervical cancer, surgery is considered the standard treatment when the cancer is confined to the cervix.

A radical hysterectomy removes the uterus, cervix, upper portion of the vagina, and surrounding tissues. Depending on the patient’s age, cancer stage, and fertility goals, doctors may preserve the ovaries, as was done in Polizzi’s case, to avoid surgical menopause.

Recovery typically takes several weeks and can involve both physical discomfort and emotional adjustment, particularly for younger women.

Although Polizzi described the surgery as one of the hardest experiences she has faced, she says sharing her journey publicly is important.

She hopes her openness will encourage women not to ignore abnormal screening results or delay follow-up appointments because of fear or discomfort. By documenting both her diagnosis and recovery, she wants others facing similar health challenges to know they are not alone.

For Polizzi, the experience has transformed from a personal health crisis into a broader message about prevention. Her story serves as a reminder that regular cervical cancer screening can detect disease early—often before symptoms appear—giving patients the best chance for successful treatment and recovery.
