Disgraced former ESPN commentator Jemele Hill’s response to the Sophie Cunningham controversy says more about today’s sports media than it does about the Indiana Fever guard.
Cunningham is under fire for defending women’s sports and Hill wasted little time weighing in.
Following Indiana’s 105-95 win over Seattle, a reporter questioned Fever head coach Stephanie White about a “Support Sophie Cunningham” rally outside Climate Pledge Arena.

A spokesperson stepped in to answer with a prepared statement from the Fever.
“Neither our organization nor Sophie had any knowledge of this demonstration and no contact with its organizers. Our only goal as a team, whether at home or away, is to win basketball games and make Fever fans for life, and we are united in that mission.”

Posting on X, Hill accused Cunningham of “ducking the smoke” while claiming the Fever betrayed Stephanie White and the rest of the team by shielding Cunningham from questions.
“Just a couple weeks ago, Sophie Cunningham was asked about the negative attention the W receives and she essentially said, that’s part of the job and she realizes she’s an entertainer. Cool.
“She’s building an entire brand on being outspoken and yet when the smoke came, she ducked it. The Fever betrayed their other players and Stephanie White by putting them in a position to answer to something they didn’t say.”
Hill went a step further, arguing a WNBA reporter was justified in pressing the Fever about the rally during the postgame media session.
“Roberta [reporter] had every right to ask these questions. The Sophie Cunningham rally happened at this game. If a rally is taking place outside the arena, you don’t wait until later to ask about it.
“If Sophie Cunningham is going to build a brand behind being outspoken, her and the Fever are going to have to take the shit that comes with it. Don’t be in it for the jersey sales and then when people start asking questions, you want to run. It doesn’t work that way.”
Hill’s posts also drew criticism from some users on X.
One reply read: “Another pretty white girl you got beef with. Color me surprised.”
Another responded, “[Sophie] already said ‘I said what I said’ a 2nd time. Why do we need to hear it a third time?”
The controversy began days earlier, when Cunningham told ESPN she opposes trans athletes who are biologically male competing against women in women’s sports.
Those comments sparked a grassroots movement in support of Cunningham, culminating in a “Support Sophie Cunningham” rally outside Climate Pledge Arena before the Fever’s road matchup against the Storm. The support extended inside the arena, where two teenage girls held up a sign reading: “THANK YOU SOPHIE FOR SPEAKING UP FOR GIRLS.”
The movement isn’t slowing down. Additional “Support Sophie Cunningham” rallies are already planned ahead of upcoming Fever games in Oregon and Minnesota.

Instead of simply letting the girls enjoy the game, Seattle Storm co-owner Celeste Keaton confronted them and unleashed a string of expletives. According to one of the girls, the confrontation left her in tears.
One of the girls later recalled, “Yeah, I’ve never been yelled at like that… I thought she was going to be nice and then she starts screaming at us and cussing at us.”
Brandi Kruse, who witnessed the exchange, pushed back as it unfolded. “Some of the fans were relentlessly booing at them,” Kruse said. “And I kind of turned around and said, ‘Look, they’re just teenage girls.'”
The WNBA later fined the Storm $25,000 and suspended Keaton for five games over the incident.
The Fever maintained that neither the organization nor Cunningham had any knowledge of or contact with the rally’s organizers.
Cunningham later addressed the controversy on social media, where she condemned Keaton‘s behavior.
She wrote on X: “I truly believe there is a safe space and love for EVERYBODY. Biological girls, biological boys, trans women, and trans men. Everyone is welcome at my table! You can disagree and still be kind.
“Bravo to those girls for standing up for what they believe. You’ll be hearing from me soon. Yay for gifts. Truly embarrassing of the co-owner. Unfortunately shows the type of leader she is.”

When WNBA players engage in left-wing activism, sports outlets praise their “authenticity” and defend their right to privacy when controversy hits.
Cunningham, however, received no such grace after speaking out in defense of women’s sports.
