CBS Sports promoted J.J. Watt as Tony Romo’s replacement in the network’s lead game booth alongside Jim Nantz and Tracy Wolfson. This decision was made after the retired four-time Pro Bowl quarterback was arrested last month on alleged OWI charges.
On Wednesday, Watt appeared on the “Dan Patrick Show.” The retired three-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year said he was excited about this opportunity amid the “tricky” situation that led to it.

“This is not the circumstances that you want something like this to happen under in,” Watt said. “Anytime you get an opportunity in any booth, it’s an incredible opportunity. So, working alongside such a legendary crew, Jim Nantz, Houston connection and everything he’s done calling some of my stuff in my career. And also just his Hall of Fame career and Tracy and everybody.

Tony Romo was arrested on July 23 after being pulled over by a police officer while driving south of Interstate 43. According to reports, the officers found an open alcohol bottle in his car. The retired quarterback refused to take a field sobriety test.
This led to his detention on OWI charges. CBS Sports then decided to place Romo on an indefinite leave following the arrest. He still has four years and $72 million remaining on the 10-year, $180 million deal he signed in 2020.
However, per PFT’s Mike Florio, Romo and the network could head into a legal battle as CBS Sports could terminate the ex-quarterback’s agreement using the contract’s moral clauses and attempt to avoid paying the remaining $72 million.
Dan Le Batard makes bold claim about Tony Romo’s CBS career
So far, CBS Sports has not yet revealed a timeline for Tony Romo’s return. This has raised questions about how the network might be parting ways with the retired quarterback.
Last month, Dan Le Batard made an interesting claim about this situation on his podcast. According to him, Romo could end up being fired the same way FOX Sports did with Mark Sanchez last year.
“Given that his employers had to stage what was called an intervention to get him to work harder,” Batard said on his show as per Barrett Media. “Now you have an incident like this that doesn’t have the kind of shame that would end someone like Mark Sanchez’ career.
“It has a shame involved that if you were lookingg for a reason to get rid of somebody, this kind of publicity is enough.”
Back in October, Mark Sanchez got into an altercation in Indianapolis. He was initially charged with misdemeanor battery but was later upgraded to a felony. In November, FOX Sports announced that they decided to fire Sanchez.
