British submission grappler Owen Jones made a triumphant ONE Championship debut last week. He said it was just the beginning and he is out to get more quality victories as his journey in the promotion continues.

The 21-year-old Apex Jiu-Jitsu Academy affiliate scored a hard-earned split-decision victory over Fabricio Andrey of Brazil in the lone submission grappling contest at ONE Fight Night 44: Jarvis vs. Rungrawee II on Prime Video on June 26 at the Lumpinee Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand. It was his maiden outing after competing in ADCC tournaments.

Jones found himself in a tight battle against Andrey. He showed solid passing before playing guard and forcing his opponent to the direction of his strengths. The Englishman managed to score his first catch with an ankle-lock, which the Brazilian grappling ace tried hard to scramble to get out from.

The two went back-and-forth and gave their best efforts as their 10-minute joust moved on. In the end, however, it was Owen Jones‘ hand that was raised in victory by split decision.

Speaking to ONE Championship following his win, Jones discussed his debut outing and how he intends to approach his campaign.

“Hey man, I hope you enjoyed. You know, I’m always trying to put on a show. Go out there, scrap. I’m not trying to stall, pushing the pace. That’s what you’re going to expect from me, man. I’m going to trash-talk, I’m going to come out, I’m going to perform. Win or lose, you know, as you can tell, man, I’m going to scrap,” Owen Jones said.

The loss at ONE Fight Night 44 was the first for Andrey, a former IBJJF world champion, in ONE Championship after winning his first three matches after joining the promotion last year.

The full replay of ONE Fight Night 44: Jarvis vs. Rungrawee II on Prime Video is available on demand for Prime Video subscribers in the United States and Canada.

Owen Jones says he was not really threatened at ONE Fight Night 44

While he had to dig deep to get the better of Fabricio Andrey in their featherweight showdown at ONE Fight Night 44, Owen Jones said he was not really threatened, even by the armbar late in the contest.

He touched on it in an interview with ONE Championship, highlighting how the armbar was something he was ready and prepared for to handle.

“No, I don’t think he had, like, good enough leg configuration or, like, control of the shoulder. I managed to clear the feet; cut the angle; like, turn my thumb towards the floor; and then keep moving, right? I feel like the constant movement is very good at escaping submissions. So, trying not to stay still … I managed to get a nice escape,” he said.

The win at ONE Fight Fight 44 was payback for Jones over Andrey, whom he lost to in their first encounter in 2023 outside of ONE Championship.
