How can KKR qualify for playoffs after 4-wicket win vs MI?

Three-time champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) continued their incredible recent run by upstaging the Mumbai Indians (MI) by four wickets on May 20. A sixth victory in their last seven outings meant KKR kept their IPL 2026 playoff qualification hopes well and truly alive.

Ajinkya Rahane’s men play the final league-stage game against Delhi Capitals (DC) on Sunday, May 24. Yet, before the contest, KKR needs a few results to go their way to remain in playoff contention.

Of the four other teams still contending for the final playoff spot, KKR needn’t worry about two of them, Delhi Capitals (DC) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK), both of whom are on 12 points with a game remaining. KKR are already on 13 points, and a win in their final outing will ensure CSK and DC cannot tie or overtake them.

With Rajasthan Royals (RR) already on 14, KKR cannot qualify by any means if they lose their league stage finale to DC.

Thus, the most straightforward way for KKR to clinch a playoff spot is for RR and Punjab Kings (PBKS) to lose their respective final games and for KKR to win its game. Yet, a PBKS victory in their final outing will still not eliminate KKR, as PBKS will only reach 15 points, a mark KKR can also reach with a win in their final game.

However, in that case, KKR will have to defeat DC by a massive margin, given KKR’s net run rate of 0.011, which is much lower than PBKS’ 0.227.

The bigger hurdle for KKR is RR, who will eliminate them from playoff contention with a win over the Mumbai Indians (MI) in their final match.

Thus, the prayers are simple for KKR fans: their team wins its final match, and RR and PBKS lose theirs, or the latter at least wins theirs by a close margin, and KKR wins theirs by a margin big enough to leapfrog PBKS.

“We just want to take one game at a time” – Ajinkya Rahane

KKR skipper Ajinkya Rahane assured that the side will continue to focus only on their game against DC, even with the topsy-turvy nature of the playoff battle. After losing their first five completed matches, KKR have produced an incredible turnaround in the second half of the season.

“We just want to take one game at a time. We’ll get to know, MI is playing before us against Rajasthan Royals. But again, what has worked for us in the last 6-7 games is just staying in the moment, giving our best, and winning those crucial moments. And yeah, be in the moment,” said Rahane at the post-match presentation (via Cricbuzz).

KKR will have the added advantage of playing their final league stage match against DC at home in Kolkata.
