Kyle Larson will have to make a difficult choice between two of the biggest races on his 2026 schedule next weekend. The reigning NASCAR Cup Series champion is entered for the 2026 Knoxville Nationals, but the finale on Saturday (August 15) directly clashes with the Cook Out 400 at Richmond Raceway.
Knoxville Nationals is one of the biggest events in sprint car racing and one that Larson has repeatedly targeted during his extensive dirt-racing schedule. The 65th annual event runs from August 12-15 at Knoxville Raceway in Iowa. Wednesday and Thursday feature qualification and preliminary races, Friday is Hard Knox Night, and the championship feature is scheduled for Saturday night.

Larson, meanwhile, has Cup commitments at Richmond Raceway. The Cook Out 400 is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET and will cover 400 laps. NASCAR practice and qualifying take place Friday at 3:30 p.m. ET, with the Cup race following on Saturday evening. While Larson can compete in Thursday’s Knoxville preliminary, he cannot race the Knoxville finale and the Richmond Cup race unless the weather intervenes.
Asked about the possibility of rain helping him manage the conflict, Kyle Larson said:
“They’d be racing at the same time, right? So, no. I can’t be in two places at once. We would obviously need rain in one of the places, but the weather looks good so far. It’s not a big deal.”
When Larson was asked whether he would prefer the Cup race not to run head-to-head with Knoxville Nationals, he added:
“Yeah, but I mean, it’s just kind of is what it is. Like, I don’t control the schedule. I’ve gotten lucky that it’s fallen on Sunday races forever. It just hasn’t worked out this year and essentially next year, but, it’s fine.”
Unless weather forces a change at either venue, Kyle Larson will not be able to compete in both races, leaving his No. 57 sprint car team to find another option for the $200,000-to-win Knoxville finale.
The Hendrick Motorsports No. 5 driver has enjoyed a strong week on dirt. He won the Capitani Classic at Knoxville Raceway on Sunday after making a late decision to enter the event, then followed it with his third consecutive Front Row Challenge victory at Southern Iowa Speedway on Tuesday. Meanwhile, he is still searching for his first Cup Series victory since Kansas Speedway in May 2025.

Kyle Larson’s decision to remain entered for Knoxville is not simply about trying to race the Saturday night finale. There is significant money available before the championship event, which gives Larson and Paul Silva’s No. 57 team a reason to pursue qualifying despite knowing that he will be absent on Saturday. The main event pays $200,000 to the winner, while the overall event purse is $1,187,605.
The financial incentive is significant. Larson explained that winning his preliminary night would pay $12,000, while simply locking the car into the Knoxville Nationals feature would provide another $15,000.
“It pays really good to win the prelim, like $12,000 and Osky (Oskaloosa) pays $21,000 or something and locking into the Nationals feature pays $15,000 so that’s a lot of money. If it works out that we can race the feature, because it rained somewhere, that’s great, but the odds of that aren’t great,” he told Motorsports.com.
The Knoxville Nationals also have a provision that could allow the No. 57 to compete even if Kyle Larson cannot make the finale. The rules allow a driver swap because it is the car that locks into the field rather than the driver. If Larson qualifies the car but cannot race Saturday because of the Richmond commitment, crew member Trevor Canales could start the car and effectively secure the $15,000 earned for making the feature.
