Team India suffered an embarrassing 125-run loss against England at Trent Bridge in Nottingham on Tuesday, July 7 in the third T20I of the five-match series. Batting first, England put up 201-7 on the board in their 20 overs and then knocked over India for 76 in 11.4 overs.

Phil Salt top-scored for England with 70 off 44 balls, while Sam Curran hammered 41* off 24. With the ball, pacers Josh Tongue and Jofra Archer starred with 4-28 and 3-29, respectively. Leg-spinner Adil Rashid also chipped in with 2-14.

India‘s defeat to England on Tuesday was their biggest in terms of margin of runs. Their total of 76 was their second-lowest ever in T20Is. In this feature, we take a look at five experts who slammed India over their poor performance.

    #1 Herschelle Gibbs

Former South African opener Herschelle Gibbs slammed India’s batters for showing lack of application during the chase against England in Nottingham. Referring to Virat Kohli’s legendary chasing skills, he commented that Team India’s batters showed no patience at all in the chase. On X, Gibbs posted:

“Did these guys not learn anything from virat ? He always gave himself a chance when chasing or setting, never rushed. The target wasn’t big ,all their batters showed no patience of getting in first. Golden rule, you can’t score runs if you don’t get in.”

Only four Indian batters reached double figures in Nottingham, with 13 being the highest score in the innings.

    #2 Moeen Ali

Former England all-rounder Moeen Ali blamed IPL’s Impact Player rule for India’s batting woes in T20I cricket. According to Moeen, India’s cricketers seem to have forgotten the art of batting in T20 cricket because things have become so easy in the IPL for them due to the Impact Player rule. Speaking on the ‘Beard Before Wicket’ podcast, Moeen said:

“The impact player makes a big difference in the IPL. I think they have lost the art of batting in T20 cricket. Whether you are three down, four down, five down in the powerplay. Dube coming in at number eight and sending Rana ahead of him, I know it’s because it is a right-hander, but you are picking a team full of left-handers, you can’t just do that.”

Chasing 202, India lost half their side for 52 in five overs and eventually folded up for 76 in 11.4 overs.

    #3 Kris Srikkanth

While most experts were critical of India’s batting in the third T20I, former captain Kris Srikkanth also slammed the bowling department. The 1983 World Cup winner opined that, minus Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya, India’s bowling looks very ordinary, with the exception of Prince Yadav. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Srikkanth lashed out at India’s bowlers and said:

The Indian bowlers bowl too many slower deliveries. Salt kept smashing the change of pace deliveries. The Indian bowlers turned Sam Curran into a great batter. Only Prince Yadav commanded any respect from the England batters. Going forward, India has no chance with this bowling lineup… Without Bumrah and Hardik, this attack and then the overall team looks very ordinary.”

Prince was India’s best bowler in the third T20I, claiming 2-30 in four overs. Harshit Rana registered figures of 2-40 in four overs, while Axar Patel claimed 1-49.

    #4 Aakash Chopra

Former opener Aakash Chopra was also extremely critical of India’s batting performance in the Nottingham T20I against England. Pointing out to the fact that Harshit Rana came out in the middle in the powerplay, he opined that India are suffering way too many batting collapses. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Chopra commented:

“The headline story is: What has happened to the Indian batting? Believe it or not, we were 41/2 at one stage and got all out for 76. We lost five wickets in the Powerplay. Harshit Rana’s batting came in the Powerplay. We folded up in 11.4 overs. 76 all out from 41/2, it is just not right, and this is not happening for the first time… A 125-run loss is absolutely mindboggling.”

India lost their top three batters inside four overs, while skipper Shreyas Iyer and Axar also fell before the end of the powerplay.

    #5 Wasim Jaffer

Mumbai stalwart Wasim Jaffer backed Team India to bounce back despite the Men in Blue registering yet another T20I loss. India have now lost four of their last five matches, while one game ended in no result. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Jaffer asserted:

“India has the potential. They will bounce back. You will need some special performances through somebody, be it in batting or bowling. If we play one game well and win, the confidence will come back and we can bounce back without a doubt.”

The fourth T20I of the India-England series will be played in Bristol on July 9. The series will conclude with the fifth T20I in Southampton on July 11.
