Festive demand set to lift FMCG growth, but margins face pressure

India’s consumer sector is likely to see stronger demand in the coming months, with FMCG demand projected to grow 9-11% between August and November as improving purchasing power supports festive spending. However, companies are likely to face pressure from elevated input costs, intensifying quick-commerce competition and a structural shift towards premium, personalised and digitally enabled consumption.

The July 2026 consumer sector tracker noted that relatively low inflation has helped restore consumers’ real purchasing power, creating a favourable environment for festive spending. Consumer demand has remained resilient despite geopolitical and Middle East-related headwinds, with companies across categories reporting healthy demand.

The recovery in volumes is also reflected in corporate performance. Hindustan Unilever recorded its fastest volume growth in 13 quarters, while Nestle India reported revenue growth of around 25%. Profitability, however, remains a near-term concern as higher palm oil, crude and packaging costs have pressured margins despite price increases.

The sector is also witnessing a major competitive shift. Traditional advantages such as distribution scale, mass advertising and established brands are increasingly being challenged by premium offerings, personalised products and quick-commerce-led business models.

The report said data-driven consumer insights and faster innovation could become increasingly important in determining market leadership, shifting competitive advantage from scale towards speed and relevance.

Quick commerce is expected to remain a key growth and disruption driver. Flipkart’s Minutes is targeting around 1,500 fulfilment centres across more than 180 cities, while Blinkit, Zepto and Swiggy Instamart together had more than 5,600 dark stores across 408 cities by July. Also Read: FMCG, Retail, Food industry must improve consumer grievance redressal system: Consumer Affairs Secy

The rapid expansion of quick commerce is likely to put further pressure on traditional FMCG distribution models while opening additional avenues for brands to reach consumers.

The investment landscape also remained active in July, with 14 private-equity deals and three venture-capital deals in the consumer sector. PE transactions accounted for around 98% of the total deal value, while the average deal size stood at about Rs 534 million.

At the same time, investors appear to be placing greater emphasis on profitability and sustainable growth. Zepto deferred its planned IPO after investors pushed for a significantly lower valuation, while the company prioritised profitability through additional pre-IPO funding.

Overall, the festive season could act as a near-term catalyst for consumer demand. Sustained growth, however, will increasingly depend on companies’ ability to protect margins, accelerate innovation and adapt to premiumisation and quick-commerce-driven changes in consumer behaviour.
