What Country Created the Ebola Vaccine?

What Is Canada Doing About the Ebola Virus?

Why Is There Urgency Around This Trial?
The vaccine targets the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola — a form with no existing licensed vaccine — currently driving what the World Health Organization describes as the second deadliest Ebola outbreak on record.
The outbreak was first declared on 15 May 2026 in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and has since spread into Uganda, with more than 3,700 confirmed cases and over 1,650 deaths recorded as of 1 August across 49 health zones in five provinces.
Moderna’s candidate is one of four Bundibugyo vaccine candidates now being developed in parallel using different technologies, in a race to find an effective option as quickly as possible. The UK has also begun a separate trial of its own Bundibugyo candidate, developed by the University of Oxford.
Is There a Vaccine for Ebola? What This Trial Actually Tests
This is a Phase 1 trial, meaning it assesses safety and dosing, not real-world effectiveness. Participants will be closely monitored for the first week, with ongoing monitoring continuing for a full year to track any long-term effects. Should the vaccine clear this phase, later trial stages are planned to take place in or near the actual outbreak zone in East Africa, where efficacy against real infection can eventually be studied.
Volunteers are being recruited through social media, a dedicated trial website, and a database of past participants, and typically receive a modest payment — usually between $50 and $100 — for their time.

A country with zero Ebola cases is now at the centre of the global effort to stop one of its deadliest outbreaks — not despite that fact, but partly because of Canada’s decades-long, lower-profile history in filovirus research.
If mRNA-1469 succeeds, the strain currently devastating The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Uganda could finally get what the Zaire strain already has: a proven vaccine.
