    While DNA damage is routinely repaired by our cells, occasional errors during DNA repair or replication can leave permanent mutations that accumulate over time, raising important questions about how cellular damage may influence the aging process.

    Could Humans Really Live for 200 Years?

    Humans may never live indefinitely, even if medicine succeeds in eliminating many diseases and other causes of ageing. A new study suggests that naturally occurring genetic changes in our cells could eventually place a biological limit on survival.

    The research, published in the journal NPJ Aging, estimates that a typical human lifespan could reach between 146 and 194 years in a hypothetical scenario where other reversible causes of ageing were removed. However, researchers also found that some individuals could theoretically live much longer under such conditions.

    Conducted by researchers at the Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology in Moscow, the study focused on a process known as somatic mutation—genetic changes that occur naturally in cells during a person’s lifetime.

    How DNA Damage and Mutations Accumulate With Age

    Our DNA is constantly exposed to damage, but cells usually repair it quickly. Sometimes, however, mistakes during DNA repair or copying can cause permanent changes in the DNA. Over the years, these changes, known as somatic mutations, can build up in different cells and tissues.

    This can create genetic differences between cells and may be one factor scientists are studying to better understand aging and age-related diseases.

    The researchers explored what might happen if other major causes of ageing could be controlled or eliminated, while this accumulation of genetic changes continued.

    Could Somatic Mutations Contribute to Aging and Disease?

    Researchers have proposed that the accumulation of somatic mutations may contribute to age-related functional decline and disease. These mutations can vary from one cell to another because DNA damage and the errors that occur during its repair happen randomly.

    Somatic mutations are already known to cause cancer, while researchers are also investigating their possible role in other age-related conditions, including neurodegenerative diseases and cardiomyopathies. However, the Nature review explores this as a possible causal relationship, rather than establishing somatic mutations as the sole cause of aging.

    Not a Fixed Prediction: Why 200 Years Is Not a Confirmed Lifespan Limit

    The researchers stressed that the nearly 200-year estimate should not be considered a prediction that humans will routinely reach such an age. The model focuses on one possible mechanism of aging and does not account for the many biological processes and interactions between organs that influence lifespan. Experts also noted that somatic mutations alone cannot determine a definitive maximum human lifespan, suggesting that future models will need to consider multiple mechanisms of aging to better understand human longevity.
