Legendary singer-songwriter Carly Simon revealed her Parkinson’s and skin cancer diagnoses, explaining her years-long absence from the public eye. Even through her health struggles, she remains hopeful and determined.

According to the WHO, the number of people living with Parkinson’s has increased by more than twofold over the past 25 years, making it one of the fastest-growing neurological disorders worldwide (1✔ ✔Trusted Source

After years away from the spotlight, Carly Simon’s latest health revelation in 2026 is a powerful reminder that resilience can outlast even the toughest diagnoses.

Why did Carly Simon disappear from the spotlight?

Carly Simon, the legendary voice behind “You’re So Vain,” shared the update in a statement obtained by People on July 27, 2026, that she underwent surgery for basal cell carcinoma (a type of skin cancer) on her face while she was simultaneously dealing with Parkinson’s and getting it treated.

At the same time, she was also dealing with arthritis, which only worsened her condition, restricting her from moving out of her house.

Despite her joint replacement in her hips and knee for arthritis, Simon was still struggling to move around while she had to deal with Parkinson’s symptoms like tremors, balance, and so on. There were days when she even found standing challenging.

“I had trouble standing up from low chairs and deep couches without someone offering me an arm. Overstuffed furniture became my enemy. Once seated, I could feel as though I had been swallowed by the chair and might remain there permanently, like a guest who had badly overstayed her welcome,” said the legendary singer-songwriter.

Being a self-conscious person and with all the ongoing treatments, it was difficult for Simon to appear in public.

“Between my mobility issues, the Parkinson’s diagnosis, the surgery, and the emotional effects of it all, withdrawing from public view was the most palatable reaction.”

A diagnosis may change the journey, but it does not have to define the life ahead.
Carly Simon is continuing to create and inspirewhile handling her health challenges gracefully. The singer-songwriter is set to release her first original album in 18 years, “Comes in Waves,” on August 14, marking a meaningful return to music after years away from the spotlight.
