    Can Obesity Make Your Brain Age Faster? New Study Reveals a Possible Link

    Their research suggests obesity may accelerate some of the same biological changes that normally occur during ageing, potentially causing memory-related pathways in the brain to behave as though they are older than the person’s actual age.

    Professor Timothy Jarome and colleagues wanted to determine whether obesity and normal ageing damage memory through the same molecular pathway.

    If they do, targeting that pathway could eventually help slow age-related memory decline or reduce dementia risk.

    What Is K63 Protein and Why Does It Matter for Memory?

    One of the key discoveries involves a molecular process called K63 polyubiquitination. Although the name sounds technical, its role is relatively simple.

    During learning, K63 helps regulate how memories are formed and stored.

    In younger, healthy brains:

    • K63 levels naturally decrease while learning.
    • This helps strengthen new memories.

    In ageing brains:

    • K63 levels remain unusually high.
    • Memory formation becomes less efficient.

    Researchers wondered whether obesity might produce the same effect.

    Researchers compared young rats fed a high-fat diet with rats fed a normal diet to examine how obesity affected memory-related changes in the brain.
