Avinox shows off wild new gearbox motor concept as it expands across the e-bike industry

Avinox may still be one of the newest names in the e-bike drive system industry, but the company isn’t wasting any time pushing the envelope.

At Eurobike 2026 in Frankfurt this week, the e-bike motor manufacturer unveiled its latest concept technology, dubbed the MG Concept Motor. Developed in partnership with major bicycle brands including Canyon, Commencal, Forbidden, and Mondraker, the new drive unit aims to rethink one of the most maintenance-intensive aspects of modern e-bikes: the drivetrain.

The headline feature is the integration of a gearbox directly into the mid-drive motor system, eliminating the need for a traditional derailleur and multi-speed cassette. According to Avinox, the MG Concept can shift gears in less than 0.1 seconds while maintaining uninterrupted power delivery. Riders can shift under load, while stationary, manually, or through automatic modes that use cadence and AI-assisted algorithms to determine optimal gearing.

Of course, all of those figures and features are worth just about as much as the paper they’re printed on, since the concept motor is exactly that: a concept on display. But motor gearboxes aren’t unheard of in the industry, and Avinox has enough backing from parent DJI and enough bike industry chops from its many partner brands to make something like this a reality.

And there’s no denying that the industry has increasingly been moving toward integrated gearbox systems in recent years. Companies like Pinion have demonstrated the advantages of moving gears away from the rear wheel and into a sealed housing, improving reliability while reducing maintenance. Pinion has even taken the next logical step of stuffing a motor into that gearbox as well. Avinox appears to be jumping on that bandwagon by combining the gearbox directly into the motor platform itself.

The company says the internal gear unit is designed to require virtually no maintenance throughout its lifespan. By eliminating external derailleurs and cassettes, the system can also work with either a single-speed chain or belt drive, potentially creating some of the lowest-maintenance e-bikes yet.

Avinox also claims the new platform can be adapted across a wide range of bicycle categories, including eMTBs, trekking bikes, eSUVs, and gravel bikes. Additional features include integrated anti-theft protection capable of locking the motor even without battery power, as well as support for heavier riders and cargo loads exceeding 150 kg (330 lb).

The MG Concept wasn’t the only technology on display at Eurobike. Avinox also showcased its new Smoothshift electronic drivetrain technology, which automatically reduces motor torque during shifts of traditional drivetrains like chains and cassettes to minimize drivetrain shock and improve durability. The system is making its debut on the recently launched Amflow TL SUV e-bike.

The reveal comes as Avinox continues a surprisingly rapid expansion. The company says it now works with more than 60 OEM bicycle brands globally, and its Eurobike booth features 19 partner brands displaying Avinox-powered bikes.

That’s even more impressive considering that the e-bike drive system market has historically been dominated by a handful of major players such as Bosch, Shimano, Brose, and Yamaha. New entrants have often struggled to gain traction due to the enormous engineering and support requirements needed to convince bike manufacturers to adopt an entirely new motor ecosystem.

Yet Avinox has quickly become one of the industry’s most talked-about newcomers, largely thanks to its high-power motor strategy that has found favor among performance-oriented e-bike brands. Whether integrated gearbox motors become the next big trend remains to be seen, but if the reaction at Eurobike is any indication, Avinox intends to keep challenging conventional wisdom about what an e-bike drive system can look like.
