Toyota issued a recall affecting nearly 21,000 electric vehicles, including Lexus and Subaru models.

Toyota recalls 2026 bZ, Subaru RZ, and Lexus RZ

The Toyota bZ, Subaru Solterra, and Lexus RZ are all based on the same e-TNGA platform. After considerable improvements for the 2026 model year, including a longer driving range and a built-in NACS charge port, the Japanese automakers have gotten off to a surprisingly strong start this year.

Toyota’s electric SUV, the bZ, was the third-most popular EV in the US in the first quarter, behind only the Tesla Model Y and Model 3.

While Toyota is finally selling EVs, the company issued a recall this week, impacting 20,991 models. The recall includes 11,495 Toyota bZ models, 4,757 Subaru Solterra models, and 4,739 Lexus RZ models.

In a letter to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Toyota said the recall was due to a potentially faulty electronic control unit (ECU) that could cause a loss of power, thereby increasing the likelihood of a crash.

Toyota said 100% of the vehicles included in the recall are expected to have the defect. Other Toyota, Subaru, and Lexus electric vehicles are not affected since they are either not equipped with a battery ECU or have one with different software.

Owners can take affected models to the closest dealer, which will update the battery ECU free of charge. Notification letters are expected to be mailed on August 3, 2026.

You can call Toyota’s customer service at 1-800-331-4331 with questions or concerns. Toyota’s recall numbers are 26LA07 and 26TA11. Subaru’s recall number is WRG26.

Owners can also contact the NHTSA safety hotline at 1-888-327-4236 or visit NHTSA.gov for more information. The NHTSA campaign number is 26V393.

The announcement comes after Toyota issued a recall for 4,808 bZ4X (sold as the bZ in the US), Lexus RZ, and Subaru Solterra models in Japan on June 19.
