NASA is building a new space telescope to search for life on nearby planets. What would it have seen on ancient Earth?
NASA’s Habitable Worlds Observatory is the agency’s next flagship space telescope, designed to do something no previous instrument has managed: directly image Earth-like planets around nearby stars and analyze the light reflecting off their atmospheres for signs of life. The mission is still years from launch. But the design choices being made right now will determine what it can actually detect. A new paper posted to the arXiv preprint server tackles one of the most consequential of those choices: spectral resolution. The authors of the study ran a careful analysis of how finely the Habitable Worlds Observatory (HWO) would need to slice…
Chelsea and Arsenal interested in signing €70 million-rated Barcelona star: Reports
Premier League giants Chelsea and Arsenal are both keen on signing Barcelona attacking midfielder Dani Olmo this summer, as per Fichajes (h/t Caught Offside). While the Blaugrana would reportedly prefer to retain Olmo’s services ahead of next season, they could sanction his sale for a €70 million transfer fee. Electric equipment means MASSIVE fuel savings for this operator
This heavy equipment operator put seven, 20-ton battery electric wheel loaders and dozers from Chinese equipment brand XCMG to work for combined 17,370 (!) hours last year, and realized an “astonishing” cost savings. Etrucks New Zealand owner Ross Linton is one of the more interesting voices in the electric commercial vehicle space. As his country’s primary distributor of Chinese-made medium- and heavy-duty electric trucks, chargers, and industrial equipment, he has direct access and real-world insights into a lot of machinery we simply don’t (yet) have access to in North America. In a recent LinkedIn post, Linton shared performance data from…
What are ALT levels and why is the Health Ministry highlighting them?
The Government of India’s Ministry of Health recently emphasised the need for people to check their ALT (Alanine Aminotransferase) levels to monitor liver health. In a post on X, their handle mentioned, “Your liver speaks through a number—ALT. ALT levels can reveal early signs of liver stress or fat buildup, long before symptoms appear. A simple blood test can help you stay one step ahead of lifestyle diseases. Don’t wait for warning signs; stay informed, stay healthy.”To understand more about ALT, we reached out to experts.DISCLAIMER: This article is based on information from the public domain and/or the experts we spoke…
A large international research team led by groups at Harvard Medical School and Princeton University has reached a major neuroscience milestone by publishing a complete map of every connection between neurons in the central nervous system of an adult fruit fly. The achievement gives scientists a new way to examine how the brain and body work together to produce complex actions, including walking and flying. It also opens the door to broader studies of the core rules that govern nervous systems. “We can see all of the neurons and their connections as a complete unit for the first time and…
Seizures could be early indicator of brain tumour, caution doctors
Image used for representational purpose. | Photo Credit: Getty Images/iStock A first-time seizure in adulthood should never be ignored, as it could be the earliest sign of an underlying brain tumour, warned medical specialists, urging people to seek prompt neurological evaluation when warning symptoms appear. The warning has come following the World Brain Tumour Day observed earlier in the week on June 8.“Seizure, particularly late-onset seizure (seizures occurring for the first time in adulthood), is one of the most important early indicators of a possible brain tumour, and such cases should always be promptly investigated with imaging,” said Roopesh Kumar…

The three sets of earbuds I reach for
I have been an audio reviewer for 20 years. My time as a freelance headphones panelist at Wirecutter, and the multitude of reviews I’ve written for sites like Reviewed, Digital Trends, IGN, and now The Verge, have given me the chance to listen to hundreds of earbuds. Some were truly excellent, and some were pretty hideous. Honestly, they tend to blur together as I move from new earbud to new earbud. But when something worthwhile comes around, it gets and holds my attention. These are the three sets that I reach for most often right now.$170The GoodIncredible call qualityGreat ANCUseful…
Avalanche’s desktop fusion reactor delivers blistering-hot plasma
No one has made a fusion reactor capable of generating power, but physicists have a pretty good road map for how to get there. One major milestone is heating fusion fuel up above 10 million degrees Celsius — nearly as hot as the center of the Sun. Avalanche exclusively told TechCrunch that its desktop-scale fusion prototype has exceeded the milestone, heating a plasma to roughly 11 million degrees C. Only a handful of companies have accomplished the feat. Most fusion startups burned through more cash to get there, too. Avalanche said it had spent less than $50 million of venture investment…
