U.S. President Donald Trump has imposed a 50% tariff on a broad range of Canadian imports, a move that is expected to affect hockey sticks made in Canada and could increase equipment prices in the U.S. The tariffs are scheduled to take effect on Aug. 19.

According to a senior Trump administration official, the executive order was signed in response to what the White House described as Canada’s “retaliation and discrimination” against U.S. motor vehicles, dairy products and alcohol.

Hockey sticks sold in the U.S. range from about $25 for entry-level street hockey models to more than $350 for elite carbon-fiber sticks. Since many of them are manufactured in Canada or use Canadian-made components, the new tariffs could push prices even higher once they come into effect.

U.S. President Donald Trump signed three proclamations on Monday imposing a 50% tariff on a wide range of Canadian exports, marking the latest escalation in the trade dispute between the two countries. The new rate is expected to take effect in 30 days.

U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said the tariffs are intended to offset what the administration described as Canada’s “retaliation and discrimination” against American exports, including motor vehicles, dairy products and alcohol.

The new duties apply to several Canadian products, including hockey sticks, wine and cement, while energy, potash, critical minerals and fish have been exempted. Since many hockey sticks sold in the U.S. are either manufactured in Canada or rely on Canadian-made components, the tariffs could lead to higher prices for consumers if the additional costs are passed on.

Canada has pushed back against the move. Prime Minister Mark Carney said he spoke with Donald Trump after the announcement and that both leaders agreed to intensify trade talks in an effort to ease tensions.
