Aryna Sabalenka recently opened up about the unexpected emotions she experienced during her engagement to fiancé Georgios Frangulis while revealing their plans for the wedding. Sabalenka and Frangulis met in January 2024 when the tennis player became a brand ambassador for the latter’s açaí superfood company, Oakberry.
They were first spotted together following the tennis player’s run at the Madrid Open in April 2024. The couple made their relationship public amid Frangulis’ regular presence in Sabalenka’s player’s box. After winning the Brisbane International in January 2026, Sabalenka hinted that she hoped to stop calling him her “boyfriend” soon. On March 3, 2026, Frangulis proposed to Sabalenka, which she had no clue about, in an outdoor setup decorated with candles and roses.
Thanks for the submission!
In an interview with Vogue Weddings, Sabalenka opened up about their wedding plan and reflected on how Frangulis caught her off guard. She said that she looked completely unprepared for the moment and also cried a little because she felt she looked ugly.
“Now it’s planned for September next year,” Sabalenka said about the wedding. “So we really have to start planning after the US Open. But about the proposal, did you see how I looked? Probably not. So, I was wearing a pair of jeans. I mean beautiful jeans, but like a white T-shirt, and flip-flops. And I did like this little ugly braid. It was like after two practices, gym, and then I was doing my treatment, like my face down on the table. I still had my marks from the table.”
She complained that nobody persuaded her a bit to put on the makeup and asked the photographers not to release the pictures with her face.
“Nobody pushed hard enough to put just a little bit of makeup on, and I was crying for a little moment because I looked ugly. I hadn’t prepared at all. Girls will understand that. I asked the videographer; I saw them there, and the photographer, ‘Do whatever you want, but my face shouldn’t be in that picture.”
Aryna Sabalenka helped Frangulis with the surprise proposal by setting up a fake important meeting.
