Alex Hughes, son of football legend Mark Hughes, died suddenly at 38 with no prior warning by a condition called Sudden Adult Death Syndrome, which can strike apparently healthy people without any symptoms at all.

Alex Hughes, son of former Manchester United and Wales footballer Mark Hughes, has died at age 38 from Sudden Adult Death Syndrome (SADS), an inquest has confirmed.

Hughes’s two sons found him unresponsive at his home in Macclesfield, Cheshire, on 19 June; paramedics were unable to revive him.

Alex had followed his father into football, working in recruitment roles at clubs including Manchester City and Grimsby Town.

Mark Hughes said the family was “heartbroken” by his son’s “sudden and unexpected” death.

What Is Sudden Adult Death Syndrome (SADS) Disease?

SADS, also called Sudden Arrhythmic Death Syndrome, is diagnosed when a person dies suddenly from cardiac arrest and a post-mortem examination finds no structural abnormality of the heart or other clear cause of death. (1✔ ✔Trusted Source

According to the British Heart Foundation, it “usually happens when a dangerously abnormal heart rhythm goes untreated and leads to cardiac arrest.”

SADS affects an estimated 500 people a year in the UK, per the BHF, though other UK charity estimates put deaths from related sudden cardiac conditions in young people as high as 800 a year.

In the US, the Cleveland Clinic estimates roughly 4,000 children and young adults die annually from SADS-conditions.

What Causes Sudden Death Syndrome related me in Adults?

In most cases, SADS is linked to inherited abnormalities in the heart’s electrical system, known as channelopathies, rather than structural heart defects. These include conditions such as Long QT syndrome, which affects roughly 1 in 2,000 people; Brugada syndrome; catecholaminergic polymorphic ventricular tachycardia (CPVT), which can cause fainting, particularly during exercise or intense emotions; and Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome.
The British Heart Foundation (BHF) notes that when a genetic cause is identified, the condition may have been previously unknown to the person and their family.

Other documented causes of unexplained sudden cardiac death include heavy long-term alcohol use in older adults, and dangerous nighttime drops in blood sugar in people with type 1 diabetes . (2✔ ✔Trusted Source

Is There Any Warning Before Sudden Cardiac Death?

Many SADS cases occur in people who appeared completely healthy, with no prior diagnosis or symptoms. A pattern echoed across multiple documented cases, including athletes, and in some cases people in their late teens and twenties with no history of illness.

That said, doctors say some warning signs can precede it, including unexplained fainting or blackouts, palpitations, or a family history of unexplained sudden death or diagnosed heart rhythm conditions. Ongoing research is also exploring whether certain psychiatric conditions may correlate with SADS risk, though this connection isn’t yet fully understood.

Can You Prevent or Screen for SADS?

Because SADS often runs in families, the BHF and cardiac charities recommend that first-degree relatives (parents, siblings, children) of someone who has died from SADS be offered cardiac screening, including an ECG and echocardiogram, to check for inherited heart rhythm conditions before they cause harm.

Where a genetic cause is identified, treatments can include medication or, in some cases, an implantable defibrillator to correct dangerous rhythms before they become fatal.

Charities including the British Heart Foundation and Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY) work specifically to fund screening programmes and support families affected by sudden cardiac deaths in the young.

    The Bottom Line

SADS remains a difficult condition precisely because it offers so little warning — a normal heart on autopsy, often no symptoms beforehand, and a diagnosis that only comes after tragedy. For families like the Hughes’, that uncertainty is part of the grief itself. Cardiac charities’ consistent message is that family screening, while it can’t undo a loss, may help prevent another one.
