House of the Dragon season 3 episode 5 opens in the Riverlands, where Daemon Targaryen’s allied forces discuss Criston Cole’s relentless attacks on their camp. Lord Roderick Dustin urges the army to hunt Cole down, but Lord Oscar Tully instead plans to outmaneuver him by securing the crossing at Stony Sept before the Greens arrive.

Their meeting ends in tragedy when Criston suddenly leads a surprise raid, killing Lord Petyr Piper and setting parts of the camp on fire before retreating into the darkness with his soldiers.

Elsewhere in House of the Dragon season 3 episode 5, Criston and Ser Gwayne Hightower continue their journey through the Riverlands. Criston admits he no longer expects to survive the war, while Gwayne urges him to leave the battlefield and serve House Hightower instead.

The journey becomes even harder after hidden caltrops cripple their horses, forcing the men to continue on foot. Criston later notices a massive footprint left behind by Vhagar, giving him hope that the dragon is still nearby.

However, the Black army reaches Stony Sept first and destroys the crossing, leaving Criston’s outnumbered force trapped on the wrong side of the river. Before they part ways, Gwayne rides toward Tumbleton to join Ormund Hightower, while Criston remains behind to lead his exhausted soldiers.

At Harrenhal, House of the Dragon season 3 episode 5 reveals that Aemond Targaryen is finally awake after his long recovery. He learns that King’s Landing has fallen to Rhaenyra and finds Vhagar is missing.

Alys Rivers protects him from bounty hunters searching for the reward placed on his head, using her strange abilities to drive away the first group. Later, a larger band of mercenaries enters Harrenhal through the Godswood. Aemond kills every attacker before reuniting with Alys inside the castle.

The episode also follows King Aegon II and Larys Strong as they travel away from Rook’s Rest. Aegon remains determined to find Aemond and take revenge, but Larys finally confronts him about his past mistakes and reminds him of the advantages he once had as heir to the Iron Throne.

Their conversation convinces Aegon to return to Rook’s Rest and follow Larys’ plan to escape across the Narrow Sea. Soon after, Tyland Lannister unexpectedly arrives alive. While Larys and Tyland discuss their next move, Janos discovers Aegon’s hidden identity. Aegon immediately kills Janos before quietly reclaiming control of the situation.

Meanwhile, House of the Dragon season 3 episode 5 shifts to Tumbleton, where Daeron Targaryen struggles with the violence he witnessed during the previous battle. Ormund Hightower continues preparing his campaign and reveals that the coins bearing Daeron’s image have already been minted.

The two also discuss military history while playing cyvasse. Daeron surprises Ormund by winning the match with an unexpected strategy, leading to another tense exchange before Ormund reminds him never to apologize for victory.

Back in King’s Landing, Rhaenyra Targaryen faces growing pressure from every direction in House of the Dragon season 3 episode 5. Lady Sabitha Frey confronts her over the promise of Harrenhal, while Daemon repeatedly warns that someone is targeting members of the City Watch.

Rhaenyra instead focuses on larger threats surrounding the capital, including Ormund’s growing army and Vhagar’s return to the skies. As more Gold Cloaks are murdered, Daemon launches his own investigation despite disagreeing publicly with the queen. The couple later meets inside the Grand Sept, where their conversation reveals an increasing rift over how the war should be handled.

Daemon later gathers the remaining Gold Cloaks and questions captured suspects in House of the Dragon season 3 episode 5. Under interrogation, they uncover a coin carrying Daeron Targaryen’s image, pointing toward Ormund’s growing conspiracy. When Daemon returns to the barracks later that night, he discovers every senior Gold Cloak has been slaughtered.

Their bodies sit arranged around a table beneath the bloody words, “A Feast for Traitors.” Earlier in the episode, Rhaenyra’s son Joffrey also arrives in King’s Landing, but the queen becomes so consumed by the crisis that she never finds time to meet him before he falls asleep waiting for her.

Another major storyline in House of the Dragon season 3 episode 5 follows Alicent Hightower and Helaena Targaryen after news of Helaena’s pregnancy spreads within the Red Keep.

Alicent urges her daughter to drink moon tea to avoid creating another claimant to the throne, but Helaena refuses because she cannot bear to lose another child after Jaehaerys’ death. Grand Maester Orwyle warns Alicent that he can no longer secretly help them, forcing mother and daughter to search for another way out of the castle.

Their escape attempt fails when Mysaria catches them using hidden passages beneath the Red Keep. Alicent tries to convince Mysaria to keep Helaena’s condition secret, but Mysaria finds the truth after recognizing the moon tea.

Although she leaves without exposing them immediately, she locks the two women inside the room. Later during the night, a wandering cat leads Alicent and Helaena to another hidden entrance into Maegor’s tunnels. They venture underground hoping to find an escape route, but accidentally lose their torch and become trapped in complete darkness.

By the end of House of the Dragon season 3 episode 5, several conflicts remain unresolved across Westeros. Criston Cole prepares for an impossible battle in the Riverlands, Aemond begins rebuilding his strength at Harrenhal, Aegon forms a stronger partnership with Larys, Daeron moves closer to the center of Ormund’s plans, Rhaenyra struggles to hold together her rule in King’s Landing, and Alicent and Helaena remain lost beneath the Red Keep as new dangers continue to emerge.
