The Cleveland Browns have made an interesting decision when it comes to who will start their preseason games.
On Wednesday, head coach Todd Monken confirmed to reporters that veteran multiple-time Pro Bowler Deshaun Watson would start Saturday’s opener at the Chicago Bears. However, he also said that he planned to start Shedeur Sanders at next week’s home stand against the Buffalo Bills.

Watson expressed excitement at the news:
“I’m super excited. I think all the hard work that I’ve put in with the training staff, with my team, my personal team, to get to this stage has been tremendous for myself. So, I’m super excited for those opportunities and can’t wait for it.”
Meanwhile, Sanders said:
“We approach practice like a game. So it’s the same amount of focus and experiences. So that’s why I’m excited: to feel how similar does it feel to practice, honestly. Because it’s a different type of intention and a mentality that we go out there every day with.”
Browns HC Todd Monken hoping to see top-tier play from Deshaun Watson in first in-game action since 2024
Speaking of Deshaun Watson, he has not played since tearing his Achilles early in the 2024 season. Since that time, the Browns have drafted three more quarterbacks, with Shedeur Sanders becoming his most prominent competitor.
Now, as he prepares to take the field for the first time in nearly two years, Todd Monken has shared some hopes:
“I’m not going to say he can’t until I see it. I’ve seen a lot of really good things over the course of the four or five months I’ve been here. I’m not going to put that on him. If he thinks he can’t play like that, that’s on him. … We’ll see if that comes to play when we get out there and go.”
He added:
“I think you have to be who you are. If you’re trying to be something you’re not, you’re not going to play at the highest level for your skillset. So, it’s just the way it is with him. He’s going to have to utilize his athleticism in order to play at the top of his skill set.”
Kickoff for the game at the Bears is at 1 p.m. ET.
