A tie-break looked imminent in the first set but Fonseca snagged a break in the 12th game to clinch the set.
The second set did go down to the wire, with Fonseca saving multiple set points in the tie-break to bag yet another set. Ruud fought back to take the third set but couldn’t sustain his level. Fonseca outplayed his older rival with ease in the fourth set to tally a 7-5, 7-6 (8), 5-7, 6-2 win.
