Top 30 players Jakub Mensik and Joao Fonseca will square off in the quarterfinals of the French Open 2026.

Mensik kicked off his campaign in Paris with a routine win over Titouan Droguet. He sneaked past Mariano Navone in five sets and then upset eighth seed Alex de Minaur in four sets. He was up against 11th seed Andrey Rublev in the fourth round.

While Mensik claimed the first set with little effort, he required a tie-break to capture the second set. Rublev raised his level and nabbed the next two sets to level the score. Both were on even footing in the fifth set until Mensik broke the impasse. He swept the last three games of the match to register a 6-3, 7-6 (6), 4-6, 2-6, 6-3 win

Following a straight sets win over Luka Pavlovic, Fonseca rallied from two sets down to beat Dino Prizmic as well as third seed Novak Djokovic. He took on 15th seed Casper Ruud in the fourth round. A tie-break looked imminent in the first set but Fonseca snagged a break in the 12th game to clinch the set.

The second set did go down to the wire, with Fonseca saving multiple set points in the tie-break to bag yet another set. Ruud fought back to take the third set but couldn’t sustain his level. Fonseca outplayed his older rival with ease in the fourth set to tally a 7-5, 7-6 (8), 5-7, 6-2 win.

Both players have fought their way into their very first Grand Slam quarterfinal, the first of many for sure. Fonseca has a 10-6 record on clay this year, while Mensik has put together a 7-3 record.

The weather forecast has rain on the cards on Tuesday. If the match is contested under a roof, then Mensik’s big serve could give him a massive advantage. However, if Fonseca is able to get on top of it, then he’s certainly going to have the upper hand in the rallies.

While both have played two five-set matches so far, their circumstances were different. Mensik found himself in a slugfest from a winning position, while Fonseca staged a comeback from two sets down. Another lapse from Mensik could prove to be costly. Fonseca has proven to be a better frontrunner, which gives him a massive advantage with a semifinal spot on the line.

Pick: Joao Fonseca to win in five sets.
