Geno Auriemma is set to reunite with his former players after taking up a gig with the WNBA. The UConn head coach is set to call the game between the Dallas Wings and the New York Liberty on July 7, where he will watch his past pupils, Paige Bueckers and Breanna Stewart, compete against each other.

A Reddit thread highlighted this news, sharing a snippet of a headline that announced the UConn coach’s involvement during the game between the Liberty and the Wings.

“Geno Auriemma to call Dallas Wings at New York Liberty on July 7,” the thread was captioned.

The post quickly earned the attention of WNBA fans, who were thrilled to see Auriemma joining ESPN’s commentary team for the game.

“Gonna have 3 of his favs (Stewie, Paige, and Azzi) all in one game. This should be fun!!” a fan wrote.

While most fans were pleased by the report of Geno joining the commentary team, others wished it had been Dawn Staley instead of the UConn coach.

“Was just saying yesterday, I wish Dawn Staley would do this!! She had 6 former players playing. 3 on each side,” another fan added.

Though opinions remained divided, Auriemma’s return to the commentary booth will be a memorable moment, with the head coach last calling a game in the WNBA in 2004.

According to reports, Auriemma will join Good Morning America co-anchor and broadcaster Robin Roberts for the game. With his former players playing against each other during the game, fans will hope to get some inside knowledge on them with Auriemma in the booth.

Geno Auriemma once reflected on Paige Bueckers and Azzi Fudd flourishing in the WNBA together

The 2025 NCAA title-winning UConn Huskies team had some great young talents, but was headlined by the backcourt duo of Azzi Fudd and Paige Bueckers. The pair have since linked up in the WNBA, suiting up for the Dallas Wings and have begun showing off their chemistry on the court.

During an appearance on the 2026 Coaches Road Show in early June, Auriemma reflected on the duo linking up in the W, while revealing his discussion with their coach, Jose Fernandez.

“I said to him, ‘You doing alright?’ (He said.)‘I’m doing great.’ I say, ‘How my guys?’ He goes, ‘Your guys are great.’ He goes, ‘No, let me fix that. They’re better than great. They’re absolutely amazing,’” Auriemma said.

The pair are just two of countless talents Auriemma has coached over the years,, as the veteran coach is set to make a WNBA return in the commentary booth in July.
