Team India may have lost the ongoing T20I series against England in a tame and meek fashion, but there is still a lot to play for in the fifth and final match at the Rose Bowl in Southampton, on Saturday, July 11. The Men in Blue could stand to lose their No.1 rank in T20Is if they lose the contest, and concede the series 0-4 to the Harry Brook-led side.

Recent defeats in Ireland and England, leading to a historic six-match winless run, have taken a massive toll on Team India’s T20I ratings in the standings. As things stand, ahead of the fifth T20I, the visitors only have a two-point lead over England as their rating has dropped to 269.

A loss could mean that Team India slips out of the top spot in the T20I rankings for the first time in over four years, potentially marking an end to a stunning run that included two World Cup titles.

Team India began their reign at the top of the standings in February 2022, after a comprehensive 3-0 series cleansweep over the West Indies. On that occasion, the team had leapfrogged over England, and had ended a six-year wait to reclaim the No.1 spot.

The team earned the No.1 ranking on the back of nine consecutive wins, a streak which began in the group stages of the T20 World Cup 2021, extending through the home whitewashes against New Zealand and the West Indies. Team India maintained the ranking throughout the captaincy reigns of Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav, before being under threat in Shreyas Iyer’s early days as skipper.

Harry Brook aims to topple India from the top of the rankings with a win in ENG vs IND 2026 5th T20I

England captain Harry Brook is not planning to take the foot off the pedal after claiming an unassailable lead in the series. The hosts, who have lost only two of their last 21 matches, are eyeing the No.1 spot in the rankings by toppling India in the process.

“To beat India 4-0 would be a pretty special series win if i’m being honest. And to go No.1 in the world would be even better. That is our main aim. We want to go out there and try and beat them convincingly again,” Brook said in the post-match press conference,” Harry Brook said during the post-match press conference in Bristol (via ICC).

Team India will be without Harshit Rana and Varun Chakaravarthy for the series finale as they have been ruled out due to a hamstring injury. England, on the other hand, have been at their ruthless best over the last two matches to extend the visitors’ winless run.
