Volvo is pulling its last wagon from the US, but it may not be for long. As it aims to revamp the brand, Volvo may bring two new EVs to America, starting in the low $50,000s.
Volvo expands beyond SUVs with EV sedans, wagons
Volvo’s station wagon for the US market, the V60 Cross Country, rolled off the assembly line in April 2026.
The Swedish automaker already pulled the S90, its only sedan, last year, leaving its lineup, like most, consisting of just SUVs.
After the 2026 model year, Volvo will no longer sell wagons or sedans in America, as buyers shift toward larger SUVs and crossovers. However, they may not be gone for too long.
According to a new report from Automotive News, Volvo is considering launching two new EVs in the US, including an electric sedan and wagon. A source that was briefed on the matter told AN that the new EVs could arrive at showrooms in 2028.
Since both are already being developed for Europe, the source said, modifying them for the US wouldn’t be too difficult.
Both models would use Volvo’s new advanced SPA3 platform, which debuted on the EX60 earlier this year. The platform uses an 800-volt architecture and cell-to-body construction for faster charging, improved range, more interior space, and the flexibility to support a range of body types.
The two EVs would wear the same 60- or 70-series badging, with a possible Cross Country wagon variant in the pipeline.
Both will be built in Europe, and prices are expected to start in the low $50,000s. However, Volvo doesn’t have high expectations for the electric sedan and wagon in America, forecasting about 10,000 annual sales.
The report comes after Volvo’s tech boss, Anders Bell, explained during an interview with Autocar earlier this year that the SPA3 “opens new possibilities” as a dedicated EV platform.
“We can do low. We can do sleek. We can do high. We can do MPVs… It’s all in the cookbook,” Bell said.
Volvo is also reportedly considering a larger three-row SUV, bigger than the XC90, that would go up against other luxury flagship models like the BMW X7.

Will Volvo keep the sedan and hatch alive in the US? Although they won’t be huge sellers, Volvo could find a unique niche market for the pair of new EVs.
Volvo will face a new wave of competition over the next few months, including the Rivian R2 (check out our review) and the BMW iX3.
To stand out in a sea of SUVs, Volvo may be smart to return to its roots with an advanced new electric wagon.
Unlike 10 years ago, “demand for wagons is growing in Europe, China, and other global markets due to their aerodynamic and efficiency advantages,” Volvo’s Chief Strategy and Product Officer Michael Fleiss told The Drive in January.
“Even, interestingly, China is coming up with wagons. It’s hot sh*t right now. So people are really liking wagons,” Fleiss said.
