It may not be 15 minutes like Geico’s, but Volvo’s new Safety Coach app is designed to help you drive safely while also lowering your car insurance premiums.

Volvo launches new app to help lower insurance costs

The optional app, launching this month, will give you access to real-time driving insights and tips directly on the vehicle’s infotainment screen and in the Volvo Cars app.

Once installed, you will get a personal “Safety Coach score” based on habits such as braking, acceleration, and turning.

You will also receive tips to help you become a better, safer driver and improve your score. The tips are based on Volvo’s extensive real-world safety tech and data.

“Staying within expected speed ranges and avoiding abrupt maneuvers makes your driving easier for others to anticipate and reduces the risk of a collision,” Mikael Ljung Aust, driver behavior expert at Volvo Cars, said.

The new Safety Coach app will initially launch in Sweden and Norway this month. Volvo said most drivers of vehicles from the 2020 model year will soon be able to download the in-car app.

Volvo drivers in Sweden and Norway will also gain access to an exclusive offer from insurance firm Volvia if they opt to share their driving data.

Shortly after, Volvo will launch the Safety Coach in the US and other European markets. Volvo said similar “insurance-related offers are also planned” in these markets.

Volvo teamed up with Cambridge Mobile Telematics (CMT), using its advanced algorithm to create each individual Safety Coach score.

    Drive safe and get rewarded

Data from CMT’s safe driving programs have shown that when drivers are actively using a safety program, the frequency of speeding events and hard braking typically are significantly reduced,” according to CMT’s CEO, William V Powers.

“This is the kind of behavior change Volvo customers can use to build safer habits over time, and be rewarded with personalized insurance benefits,” Powers added.

The app is completely optional, and drivers will be able to choose if they want to share data with affiliated insurance companies in return for usage-based insurance premiums.

    Volvo’s Safety Coach app will be available for model year 2020 and newer XC40, EX40, C40 Recharge, S60, XC60, EX60, XC90, V90, and EX90 models with a Google Android-based infotainment system.

After delivering the first EX60 models in Sweden last month, Volvo is ramping up production and deliveries of its “game-changing” electric SUV.

Volvo opened orders for the 2027 EX60 in the US in May, starting at $58,400. The base EX60 P6 Plus offers an EPA-estimated driving range of up to 307 miles. The EX60 P10 AWD, starting at $60,750, offers up to 330 miles of range.

In Germany, it starts at 54,328 euros ($62,500) with a WLTP range of 379 miles (611 km). The P10 AWD and P12 AWD start at 56,849 euros ($65,000) and 61,891 euros ($70,900), respectively, with WLTP ranges of 410 miles (660 km) and 503 miles (810 km).
