    Volkswagen-ID.4-Tiguan

The Volkswagen ID. Tiguan is expected to debut later this year, bringing much more than just a new look and name.

Volkswagen ID.4 due for an overhaul as the ID.Tiguan

Volkswagen announced in April that it would end production of the ID.4 at its Chattanooga, Tennessee plant. Instead, the company is shifting focus to more popular gas-powered SUVs like the three-row Atlas.

The electric SUV remains on sale as VW prepares to introduce its replacement. The company previously said it had enough supply of current ID.4 models to “support customer demand into 2027,” when VW’s next electric SUV is set to go on sale.

We got our first look at the ID. Tiguan, as it will be called, earlier this year after it was spotted during cold-weather testing, revealing an entirely new look.

Following the ID. Polo and ID. Cross, the ID.4 is next in line for an overhaul. The electric SUV will be rebranded as the ID. Tiguan, taking on the best-selling nameplate as part of Volkswagen’s move away from the previous number system.

With its official debut expected by the end of 2026, the ID. Tiguan was captured again with barely any disguise.

New spy images from CocheSpias confirm that the upcoming electric SUV will not only bear the Tiguan name but also closely resemble it.

Compared to the current ID. 4, the ID. Tiguan features a more traditional SUV-like shape with a squared-off front end. It’s also shown with new headlights and a redesigned hood, more like the Tiguan.

From the side, the ID. Tiguan is shown with new doors and more traditional-style handles that pop out.

While it’s not shown, the interior is expected to adopt Volkswagen’s new cabin design and updated infotainment system.

Based on driver feedback, Volkswagen reintroduced physical buttons for climate control and other functions, located below the center navigation screen and on the steering wheel.

The ID. Tiguan will be underpinned by Volkswagen’s new MEB+ platform, which powers the ID. Polo and ID.3 Neo.

Volkswagen has yet to reveal specifics, but recent battery and electric drive updates should improve driving range and charging speeds compared to the current ID.4.

The ID.4 is powered by an 82 kWh battery with an EPA-estimated range of up to 291 miles in the RWD version. The AWD model drops to around 263 miles. Under WLTP conditions, the 2026 VW ID.4 has a range of up to 351 miles (566 km).

According to Automotive News, the Volkswagen ID. Tiguan will make its debut by the end of 2026. The electric SUV will replace the ID.4 at Volkswagen’s Emden, Germany, plant.

The ID. Tiguan arrives after several brands have shown early success after recently launching heavily updated or new EVs, such as the 2026 Toyota bZ and Hyundai IONIQ 5.

What do you think about the changes? Are they enough to win back buyers, or should Volkswagen head back to the drawing board? Let us know in the comments.
