The actor and his daughter faced advanced melanoma and HER2-positive breast cancer at nearly the same time, relying on modern treatments and strong family support.

TV Icon William Shatner and Daughter Survive Stage 4 Cancer Together

TV icon William Shatner, 95, and his daughter Melanie Shatner Gretsch, 61, have revealed how they supported each other while undergoing treatment for two different stage 4 cancers at nearly the same time.
Melanie was diagnosed with HER2-positive breast cancer after discovering a small lump beneath her breast in July 2022, despite having received a clear mammogram five months earlier.

Further testing showed that the cancer had spread to lymph nodes in her chest. She underwent chemotherapy with HER2-targeted therapies, a double mastectomy and 30 radiation treatments over approximately 18 months.

As Melanie approached the end of her treatment, Shatner was diagnosed with stage 4 malignant melanoma, an aggressive form of skin cancer. His illness began with a growing lump on his cheek, which was initially thought to be a blocked salivary gland.

Surgery later confirmed melanoma that had spread to his lungs and brain. He underwent removal of the facial tumour followed by two years of combination immunotherapy.

Melanie’s Breast Lump Nearly Went Undetected

Melanie first noticed the lump by chance during the night. Although the initial imaging examination did not reveal anything concerning, she insisted that the technician recheck the exact area where she had felt it.(1William Shatner, 95, and His Daughter Melanie, 61, Reveal They Fought Stage 4 Cancer at the Same Time (Exclusive)

The second examination detected the abnormality, and subsequent testing confirmed advanced HER2-positive breast cancer.

HER2-positive cancers contain high levels of a protein that can accelerate tumour growth, but targeted medicines have significantly improved treatment options for many patients.
Melanie described chemotherapy as the most physically exhausting part of her treatment, while radiation therapy was emotionally draining. During one particularly difficult night, she called her father and told him she feared she was dying.

Shatner arrived at her home shortly afterwards, comforted her and said:

“This is going to be a blip in your life. You’re going to get through this.”

While Melanie was completing treatment, Shatner noticed that a lump on his cheek continued to grow.

A doctor initially advised him to massage the area, believing it was caused by a blocked salivary gland. When the swelling persisted, a plastic-surgeon friend urged him to have it removed.

The tumour was identified as malignant melanoma, and further evaluation showed that the disease had spread to his lungs and brain. This meant the cancer had reached stage 4.(1William Shatner, 95, and His Daughter Melanie, 61, Reveal They Fought Stage 4 Cancer at the Same Time (Exclusive)

Shatner received combination immunotherapy, which works by blocking signals that suppress immune activity and helping the immune system recognise and attack cancer cells.

His physician, Dr. Omid Hamid, explained that these therapies have transformed the outlook for some people with advanced melanoma and can be tolerated even by older patients.

Modern Treatments Changed Their Cancer Journeys

Melanie benefited from chemotherapy and medicines specifically targeting HER2, while Shatner received immune checkpoint therapy for metastatic melanoma.

Their doctors said advances in these treatments played an important role in achieving strong responses. By late 2024, both father and daughter had been declared cancer-free, with Melanie described as having no evidence of disease.

Their experience highlights the importance of investigating persistent physical changes, seeking another assessment when concerns remain and receiving specialised treatment tailored to the type and biology of the cancer.
